Start Squad?

Then they could write to their club and association who between them should stump up the cash. They always did before START funding and I've spoken to at least a couple of club treasurers who have a bit of extra money as juniors don't take it anymore.

Another restraint on the tours is the number of people you can actually take. Each of the four venues only has a certain number of beds. Beyond Lagganlia this also effects the boy/girl ratio. You can't take an indefiniote number as the number of support staff/cost os assembly etc would increase by dramatic proportions. It is more than just taking those who might possibly make it if they get the extra training. As several people have said if you've got the motivation you can do the training yourself and get yourself to foreign competitions. However you do need the support of yiur family/club to do this.

I wondered why becks didn't want us to get the olympics
Tatty has hit the nail on the head. And for halden/uppsala don't forget flights and veichle (sorry) hire, as well as food, beds maps etc. There is always a limit.

Selections which are based on results are fine - if they are for competition - but they cannot take into account potential - which is what Start Squad selection should be doing. that is why you get the bizarre situation of non-squaddies being selected for internationals. I know of a 16 year old in our region who is relatively new to the sport who has more potential than most of the usual suspects - but it is going to be very hard for him to get the experience and technique to get on a tour - (but he might just do it anyway!)
I don't wish to sound patronising, but i don't accept that a self-financing tour is out of reach of the majority of juniors as a certain level of reserves is necessary to pursue the sport at all.
Tatty is closer to the mark - although I don't think venues are a problem - I have heard that next year's Glenmore tour is not going to Glenmore but somewhere else due to a cock up over bookings - so there are alternatives out there. Coaches are the sticking point and we've debated this before - i see courses advertised for young people to train so perhaps we are making some progress there - I detect through nopesport with the likes of Becks and Kitch that is getting cool to coach - so hope fully even that barrier will be removed in years to come.

Coaching is cool! But unfortunately we're still spread so thinly on the ground that we have to do quite a lot at the moment. I would love to volunteer to coach on a self funded tour but I already have START commitments and most other qualified coaches are already coaching on this program too. Might have to wait till Brooner et al are qualified, and it doesn't happen too quickly! (though usually nowhere near as long as it tok me, granted).

Getting the coaching qualification is a major stumbling block. Having seen the amount of work involved in getting just to level 2 there's no way I'm going to do it, particulary as it mostly seems irrelevant to coaching at an elite level.
From my experience as a junior the best advice/most inspiration often came from the unqualified control hangers who'd been there and done it as athletes but didn't have the bit of paper to say they could pass on that experience.

Probably is that these people can't run a course without the ones who have the piece of paper looking after them.
(And I didn't say this right, but you can skip the honorous Level 2 qualification and go straight to Level 3, but you do have to produce some Level 2 work aswell. But I ain't said that, right).

err, yup, should probably do something about that really...
Start squad seems to get by ok in using unqualified coaches as well though, so whats that all about? Presumably if you have a couple of qualified coaches its alright to use unqualified ones as well?

Maybe so in the UK as before Lagganlia they used Faskally, but in Scandinavia most of the club huts are small.Gimmle's hut in Halden only actually has 10 "beds" the rest, ie lads, sleep in the gymWhen at Halden I was asked to search for other huts as Gimmle's hut is very pricey. Although there were several other huts around they had very little accommadation or places to rest weary heads. Nick Barrable found Uppsala which has great accommadation but can only take a certain number. When using the huts you have to also take into acount that the club members will continue to use then whilst you are there which can cause problems and not make it appealing to the club offering facilities. The cost of the foreign tours is tremendous and I suspect that if non squaddies were asked to pay the true cost that it would be beyond some people.
