I am at Warwick University, and we have just finished getting campus mapped, and an idea came to me about producing a series of short races at Universities around the country, like BUSA, but one day affairs , organised when a big event is nearby, like a national event.
It is because is only medium distance, and a 'shorter' race series could be a laugh.
Any ideas? Also which universities are mapped??

Now, I know you're a feminist, and I think that's adorable, but this is grown-up time and I'm the man.

I know Oxford have done something like this, and was a big success from what I've heard.
Is Edinburgh mapped at all Brooner, Rocky? Seem to remember Prof. Ackland talking about a KB map in another thread somewhere.

There's no o-map of KB. There is a contour-only map of Edinburgh city centre though.
Warwick is a pretty good campus to map - there's even a fair bit of
forest around. I think Stirling is mapped, and I did an excellent park
race on the campus at U.Alberta (Edmonton). With low traffic and random buildings, I reckon most campus universities would stand a good park race.
KB would be pushing it though.

It's the EPO thread I was thinking of. Guess that's a different KB you were referring to there.

there is an excellent map of Princes Street Gardens, but getting permission to race there is difficult.
St Andrews would be a great place to get mapped and use for orienteering, but there probably isn't enough local interest to warrant it. If I was going to be here next academic year I would think about mapping it...

Lancaster University is definitely mapped - as well as the campus there's a strip of wood at the back which is right next to the M6.

This sounds like it might be interesting, sheffield's campus is unfortunatly located on four sides of two duel carridgeways...and even if it wasn't then it wouldn't be very interesting anyway. There are however many small parks and woods that have been mapped.....mostly due to peelLS and obviously oli who bides in sheffield. The Ponderosa springs to mind, but we all know it like the back of our hands....come to mention we know most of the places like the back of our hands!!
Anyway i like short races, and if they were situated near a big event then i might be persuaded. Though i can't see there being many gaps in this years calendar....booked up for ages.

I tried to get permission to map pollock halls for a wee sprint race razzmatazzathon for freshers week but they weren't having any of it.
And that was before any mention of having the race as an alc-O.

Newcastle uni campus wouldn't be much good, but there's about 3 areas within 10 minutes walk that would be, one of them has a good new map, one a bad new map and one a bad old map...
Campus is just on the SE edge of this (the old bad map, which also covers the bad new map area):

Aye, Oxford runs various Park races around the city centre already but as there's no central campus nothing like that. I was thinking of getting to town centre mapped and doing some kind of race in the town around the World Cup but then I'm not sure how up for it colleges would be.
Will? We've got proper fire now!

in terms of oxford, i'd definitely investigate the possibility of that. in the stoat (for mr smith's untrashed original website see the link below), we used (amongst others) brookes campus, magdalen fellows' garden, st catz, merton sports ground. in all these cases the guys in charge were cooperative, altho' they'd never heard of wot orienteering is and wanted to know exactly where everybody would be running. so i made my best guess and told them that. magdalen were also persuadable to hand us the keys to use a few of their back gates, provided we had them manned the whole time, so other colleges nearer to the middle could also be persuaded. we did get quite a bit of out-of-bounds tho', which cut down on possibly routes (maps are still on the page...). the science area people on the other hand (ie university security) just said yes do whatever you want, although since then they have always refused on the grounds of that we are probably animal rights activists wearing bombs.
