You probably already know stodge but just incase you haven't been told a sesamoid bone is just a floating bone, like your patella (knee cap) which helps the tendon slide over a joint. It all depends on how good the surgery is I guess to see how well they can leave the tendon in place. With it being in your foot, if it's in a toe then fingers crossed it should be alright as not as much friction goes on there as the knee joint. But obviously listen to your doc.

Ok
Well seeing as the subject has resurfaced Ill give you an update.
Had surgery at end of January 2005 – seemed to go well Proff Rolf took out one of my sessamoids that had ‘died’ after a chronic stress fracture had not heeled – my feeling is that the original stress fracture may have been in part caused by Orthotics .
Anyway the bone he took out promptly fell in to two (ive got it in a little jar – yuk)
I was in a cast and on crutches for 6 – 7 weeks.
Then started long slow rehab.
Proff didn’t want any forced rehab – he wanted it to heal slowly and naturaly. Prognosis was pain for at least 6 months after the Op then slowly try and do more and more .
The right foot's sessamoids seemed to be just out in sympathy and are now fine.
I can now walk for several hours with very little pain – and have walked up my first Hill for 3 years
I can mountain bike fine now with no pain and have done loads of MBTO over the summer and a 24hr team mountain bike race.
I have started gentle running – see training diary but I have built up to 13 mins of 100m run 50 m walk alternating, but can still feel a little pain, which is better afterwards. The pain is mainly in the tendon forward of the surgery. I think this is mainly due to 2 years of wearing ultra stiff soled shoes and my tendons getting used to bending again
Over did it on Sunday planning for YBT qualifier on chase (6 hours walking with lots of bracken bashing) so am having a couple days rest before trying my first 3 min continuous run after the weekend. However the pain now is still only about 0.5 out of 10 when the pain pre-op would have been 10 just walking 1 km.
Scar is very good and my physio of 17 years has had a look and is optimistic and given me a couple of stretching exercises to do.
My aim is to build up to be able joggle round a Lt Green at the November Classic – but am not setting any targets further than that as I am not sure what I will be able to do in the long term….
So at present Stodge is a very happy camper – if it does not get any better that it is now at least I have my outdoor life back again …..
Just need to lose that stone I put on now
