Progress is being made about the possibilities of training on Jap style terrain in Vilnius. We have contacted all the National Federations to advise them.
The most relevant forest is being remapped at present for the Lithuanian Championships on June 26th - it is embargoed until then. I think on 27th there will be an open race as well. (If I was planning any kind of test races I would use this area)
The week following 26th there will be opportunities to train twice a day in the Vilnius region... on steep slow terrain & also on nice normal terrain. We have also sorted out the possibility of access to Lietuvos Telekomas Sportas for swimming, indoor training, physios etc etc. The weekend following there is a WRE on sand dune terrain in Latvia.
Options for getting to Vilnius include:
1. If coming from Jukola.... ferry to Tallinn & then bus down to Vilnius (10 hours)
2. If coming from Jukola... Ryanair from Tampere to Riga - rtn to Stanstead after Kapa
3. Direct flights to Vilnius on Baltic Air from Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki, London
4. BA are flying London / Vilnius next summer.
There is almost no need for vehicles to train here... all areas can pretty much be reached by public transport and / or taxi
We are reserving various good value accommodation... the main location being a hotel close to the centre at around £18 - £20 pppn B&B. (Cheaper options available)

Gross,
sounds interesting but,
how relevant is "most relevant" ?
have you been to the relevant areas of Japan ?
Open question
Has anyone that has been to Japan been to the Vilnius areas ?
do you agree with Gross' assessment ?

Andy.... me not been there... but others have At present it looks like there will be at least three or four major nations coming here as part of thier preperations.
If you look at the area on the nope gallery it's quite white... but it's an old map.. now it's quite green. I have run on this area a couple of times and reckon elite runners will be around 9 min / km here

And in reply to Ben's question.... if you look at the results from the World Games I think you'll find that Lithuania got a silver medal in the relays (or it might have been bronze) so at least 4 orienteers have... and of course I was GB Team Leader at WC in Japan in 2000.......... but none of these areas are anything like the WOC areas......
Of the Brits I know then Neil Marston is probably qualified to offer a general opinion as is Dan M.... I can't think of others who have been to both Vilnius & Japan WOC areas? Godders has probably discussed with Neil & can offer a thrid hand view!

On this topic, check out Pasi's site for maps from the recent WOC training camp. Looks pretty tough - Pasi's comments are interesting too.
Sample quote - "In this training I learned that you really have to push it when running on the slopes. Also downhill running plays quite an important role."
