We're running a Come and Try It event and I'm looking for advice.... I want to produce a leaflet to hand out to people as they arrive in the car park, explaining what orienteering is and what they need to do to register. It's not designed to replace club members explaining and helping, as we'll have lots of helpers onhand, but just so newcomers don't get out of the car and wonder what on earth they need to do! I also hope it'll be a way of advertising other events and getting the club website some publicity. Has anyone done anything like this, and if so, can I borrow a copy please?
Also any advice on things that have worked well at your events would be good. We're planning to do lots of prizes, and hopefully will be able to provide snacks and drinks.
Thanks!

I'm sure people have more up to date stuff, but http://www.stragglers.info/newreaders has a good section under "What happens at an event?" It was written for handing out at events but prior to the electronic punching era so would need some adapting.

I saw a really good idea at this weekend's SO local. Each of the places you needed to go (like map sales, registration etc.) was marked with a large, very obvious coloured number that could be seen some distance away. There were signs up saying "new to Orienteering? Just follow the numbers". Even the start had a coloured number, as did the finish and download. There were members given the specific job of helping anyone who looked new or lost but I saw several people taking themselves around the assembly area and asking what to do when they got to particular points. This may be obvious, but it was the first time I have seen it. I think leaflets can be quite hard to manage at an event - one more thing to sort out when it is maybe windy and wet.
Incidentally, it was great to see well over a hundred participants at a Saturday morning local.
