British Elite Championships 2004 (middle and classic)
3rd and 1st Ed Nash
4th and 3rd Duncan Archer
5th and 4th Dave Godfree
Ed was of course British Elite Champs Classic Winner in 2003 as well as 2004.
None of these three have made the squad.
British Squad 2005
12 men
8 of them didn't run in the British Elite Champs.
Hmm...

I know we had a discussion about this before but how can you call it the British Elite champs if you don't make it a selection race? I know it being up in north scotland put people off coming and it clashed with some scandi event but if thats the case then don't make it the BEOC. I think the BEOC must be a selection race and make it prime event where all 'elites' take part.

i think that this year for the first time it is right to have equal men and women. In terms of the depth of women in/close to teams this year it was as many with the men as the women. The gaps are often bigger in the women's races but domestically this year in some races eg british sprint champs it has been closer in the womens. Obviously the strength in depth in GB generally is stronger in the mens but there are a lot of women performing at a similar level with high goals which is what they are looking at for the squad. Yes there are people who have had good results that have been left out but it's about people they believe can get top international results in the next few years. And also some people specifically don't WANT to be in the squad, the full picture is not to be found on the results sheet. especially with many of our top men living abroad.
also selectors do funny things and i'm sure team places next year will also be taken by determined individuals who are not named in the 2005 squad. we all have to make stuff happen for ourselves.

I can understand why this might be asked on some occasions but here?? I would question whether you could make a better squad by knocking out any of those women and replacing them with the 13th, 14th and 15th men.... I think if anything the women on that list seem to deserve their places in the squad more than some of the men on the list.
So who thinks they can create a dream GB squad - 24 places with no restrictions on men, women, attention to selection races......

Ladies - all valid arguments
but I'll take you to task on your assumption
because it says something...
Dids expressed no view on whether there were to many women or too many men in the 2005 squad
