Oj Oj Oj! MUD is more specific to running in terrain. Get some shoes with decent grip instead. Intervals in ankle deep mud (eg doscoes seshs at becketts park) can certainly give you a good VO2max workout and at the same time help develop strength for terrain. Your running economy in terrain is most important as an orienteer and studies have shown we should really be doing as much as 50% of training in terrain or as close to it as possible to get the most benefit. I'd agree that sessions on roads/the track are of benefit too tho. And possibly if you can't push yourself enough alone the benefit of training with others could outweigh the benefit of specifity. Of course if you are training specifically for sprint races, either in towns or parks, terrain specificty doesn't matter so much.
