spot the fastest route (not the yellow pen)
and keep in mind that anything even slightly green is guaranteed bad visibilty, and awfuly slow.

Follow the line to the ditch ,
bear right to the path through the green then leave the path an cut up round the end of the spur
hack it through the green round the spur and out to the track
up the track and off right to the path
path through the green and along the fence, then up through the grey and open areas

If you could run forever ......

the yellow pen looks good. the only faster route maybe i can see is to go straight line, veer right before the mass of black crap, find a way down to teh large track, along to the big bend, across to ikkle path, follow all the way round to the fence, up right of reentrant through openy bit.
just noticed that kitch has beaten me to it.

Straight up to first track, follow east until bend, then head into the white. Head north to northern of two small tracks on hill, then as james
OR
head north to ditch and then follow ditch up to its end
then head more or less north until you hit the small path close to the control - then as yellow line

For a start shift this to the orienteering bit - it's hardly bloody banter.
But also you can't pick the best route using the map that's there, two of the possibilities involve running off that bit of map.
But the yellow is certainly not too bad. And although not many people did it, looking at Kitch's route, maybe that is a bit better - there was a good time from going even further right - with the same attack to the control. And a bit further left along some other tracks wasn't as bad as people expected.
Classic long leg - where it isn't so much the route you choose, but how well you execute it...

Yellow line for me. While the climb on the leg's roughly equal either left or right I feel it's slightly less rude in the middle of the leg rather than while you're on fine nav in. For somebody fit enough this would be the other way round i.e. you're on a slow anyway so why not do the climb then, but personally there's way too many contours in the approach from the fence to be able to concentrate properly. Yellow line I feel is slightly easier nav all round also. Not much to choose I wouldn't say.
