Well i've taken no chances with the British and booked an entire youth hostel for the club so there's no chance of being molested by school children in the toilets. mind you that was before the relays were cancelled - now probably no one will go at all!

I'd love to see their reaction to the toilet & showering facilities at the o-ringen, 50 showers on a big stage in the middle of a field, a row of 30 toilets along a pipe etc etc

The first time I went to one of those O-ringen showers it put me in mind of a natural history programme about seal colonies - it wasn't so much the showers on the stage but all the folks lying around with no clothes on! Yes the toilets are a real education - I wonder if the Swedes have the same issues with child protection as we do - they are famously liberal - do they see every adult as a potential paedophile as we seem to these days. A youth hostel warden told me that school groups now usually booked the whole hostel so no-one else was there which he found rather ironic as the kids were meant to be there having an education about the outside world ( you know coming into contact with other environments) when all that was happening was the school environment was being transfered to another location - so they were not learning anything about how to get on with other people at all

why should a 17 yr olds parents decide whther they can or can not have their photo on the cover of compass sport
Actually on this side of the border shouldn't.
Quote from Children (Scotland) Act 1995:
Parental responsibilities end at 16, except the responsibility to give guidance which continues to 18.
Parental rights end at 16.If a parent thinks that they will need to continue to make legal decisions for the child they should seek to be appointed to act for the child.
Of course, consent of 17 yr old is required as I noticed with (nope) young team photos

It's all a total load of b******s & is just an indication of the state this country is in just now..... I can't wait to exit stage left:)
For the record as the 'proud' owner of a 14 & 10 year old girls then I have no problems with them living in the real world... they'll grow up knowing what's out there not having been molly codled by the system....

i think parents are legally responsible until your 18, not sure though.
I think BOF should have some form which has to be filled in if the parents/child doesn't want photos to be published. Then compass sport and RC5 can just go ahead and use the photos without worry. When is the next issue of RC5 out anyway???

The sentiment expressed by Gross2004 is actually quite close to my heart (although I might not have put it so colourfully) I've just had a look at the BOF document on the conduct of parents and carers of young children and found it really quite annoying as it seemed to suggest two things:
I That I don't have the best interests of my own children at heart.
2 That BOF know my children better than me.
For instance - take that little dig Jess made about beating her brother at a night event - if her dad had said it ( and he beat Dan too) then that would have contravened the bit about "never belittle a child for losing or making mistakes" - if my son got beaten by one of his little sisters I might well pull his leg about it.
I have one philosophy on child care - you cannot protect your children - you can only prepare them to deal with life them selves - the way things are going young people will grow up without a clue how to look after themselves in tricky situation .

That's exactly what I was saying when we were running our Outreach this week. We took a group of disabled children out into the Parks, they had a fantastic afternoon, and we weren't allowed to take photographs to show anyone the good work we're doing as a club. We're going to have a whole generation of kids who won't know how to deal with people outside their nuclear family, who either trust no one or trust everyone - neither option being particularly healthy. It's a worrying direction we're heading in and especially concerning accommodation on squad weekends etc - how many squads will no longer be able to afford going away regularly if they're forced to stay in accommodation other than village halls etc? How about the JIRCs or Peter Palmer's - what happens when people get wind of them? Yet has it done any of us any damage? I hasten to say not.

Well said Beck - i'm sure you'll bring up very capable children and win the varsity match too!
The irony is that the thing which attracts a lot of families to the sport it the opportunity to give their children a real adventure and encourage independence and resourcefulness - but this will not be allowed to be used as a selling point for the sport - because there will be no pictures of kids doing it to prove the point - it's because BOF have to tick the right boxes to get the sports council funding - and this is one of those boxes .
