While we're discussing nice areas, where do you think is the most overrated area? I'm not talking about horrible areas which everyone knows are horrible, nor areas like Cromer where the JK has to go wherever its allocated to East Anglia. I'm talking about places which are
cracked up to be good, but aren't.
From this years events, I'll nominate
Blakeholme and Ogof (too rough to go quickly enough to make navigation a challenge)
Dunes at Lossie (too detailed to be worth mapreading, better just to bang into the circle and hunt around - to quote pretty much all the internationalists I could find.)
Most overrated area

So far some of my best results from this year have been written off - SHI in the Trossachs because the hills are too big and BEOC in Lossie because the hills are too small.
And now I will bash an area where I had one of my better runs a few years ago - Dallaschyle (I think that is what it was called) They brought us through a nice corridor for the WOC short race and people said it was fantastic but I don't actually think there is anything to it other than that nice corridor.

Nonsense. The complex stuff is perfectly navigable. All my mistakes in June were on the vague flat bits (as you may have noticed at the time!). If the detailed strip was more than 150m wide and didn't have whopping great rides ploughing across it it might be more of a challenge, but all it really shows is the lack of genuine technical terrain in the UK.
As to overrated areas, I'd go for Sherbrook. Next year's JK will be the third UK Cup race held there, so someone clearly seems to think it's a high quality piece of terrain - heaven only knows why!

Sure its navigable: I navigated carefully to the controls there, checking off features, and got roundly cuffed by the rush and hope brigade. Thats what I meant by overrated - the best strategy is to avoid the technical challenge of mapreading.
Dallaschyle - I planned the 1999 six days there and can happily confirm the difference in mapping quality between the WOC corridor and the rest.

Read the topic and thought someone would mention Sherbrook. I'm going to stick up for it cos it's probably my favourite area (obviously I'm biased, but hey). No-one pretends Sherbrook's anything it isn't, unlike a lot of the other areas mentioned. It's not rated as being a technically intricate area. I don't think there are many more varied areas in Britain than Sherbrook. From the heathery heathland, to the fast decidous woods, to the blocky forestry commission bit. Loads of hills, great for route choice, some detail to keep you interested...Okay, the lakes was a good JK, but Sherbrook should be a better JK classic than Star Posts and the Forest of Dean. I also think people will make more mistakes there than at Penhale which I deam to be a piece of piss and dull as nope.

The most bored I have ever been while orienteering was at Sherbrook. I can't understand why anyone would ever want to go orienteering there. It was simply a track run and then out into the moorland to follow a long line of other people. No thinking involved whatsoever. Until the control in the wrong place, that is.
On the other hand, perhaps it depends on the planning, but even so, it must still be fairly boring.

The more I think, the more confused I get...
