Freshers Pack
Just viewed the nope freshers pack and I'm impressed. The video is excellent - none of this namby pamby intro to O stuff - good hard action (That's exactly what i wanted with my Blair Witch Project Project)- lots of Rocky et al jumping over stuff and crashing through the undergrowth - I thought the sequence of them coming down what was obviously a very steep slope was akin to mountain bike action - no kids or crumblies to be seen (not sure about Clive Hallett!) some lovely locations and the music was good. the back up stuff was fine and it did exactly what it said in the explanation - all the rest is up to the clubs - the pack gives the impressions which would otherwise be hard to convey to newcomers. now the kids were late for school and I havnt done the shopping. do you guys really punch controls that fast?

all the credit for the dvd has to go to samsonite, very fine editing. also due respect is mr stew 'WATTOK' caithness who did most of the filming when he was injured and not allowed to run. was lots of fun to make as well, wandering around looking for nice bits of forest to run through and stuff to jump over.
having used the pack at our freshers fair last week i took some time to reflect on it afterwards, while speaking to, of all people, a kendo coach. i think one of the problems in the past is that people would sign up for our email list or come to a beginners event expecting some kind of 'hill walking with a twist' once there however they would find a group of people talking about racing, losing time, and generally what we think of as orienteering.
this year however there were definitely people who took one look at the dvd and, sounding aghast uttered the immortal words...'you don't have to RUN do you?' before scuttling off (well, we kept chatting to a few telling them that since they were in the forest and no one could see them it didnt really matter.)
but there were a few others who were just wandering round and saw the video who approached us with 'well i do a fair bit of running and i've signed up with the xc club, but what is it you do' from where we could launch into chat about how much better our sport was, and how it was possible to be in both clubs as our training overlaps quite a lot.
i guess time will tell how successful it was, freshers event #1 is tomorrow night...

So it is. On what I think is the most detailed area yet mapped in Central Scotland. What do you want to do about maps? I can give you electronic maps in pretty much any format you like.

I do a questionnaire for our freshers. Among the questions..
"Most of you applied to other universities. Was there any part of the Edinburgh entry process that was particularly good?"
Among the answers...
"nope"
The questionnaire is anonymous, would anyone like to own up?

... and Simon le Bon is cousin of another famous oxford alumnus and prominent ex-ouoc member. oh yes.
And that's a good deal less cool than 20 years ago methinks.

Wahey! Less confused looking orientals and far more interested looking outdoory types. Unfortunately our lap tops have jobby batteries and we're now without nope video, but the stall is looking good - CJ has a few pics.
Will? We've got proper fire now!

I'm pretty sure I'm just an alumnus. Myles and I, and Graeme, and Simon-le-Bon's cousin, the whole bunch of us, would be alumni.

It's a magical world. Let's go exploring.

Stonking! it arrived yesterday (when I was having a sickie) and made me feel better, until I developed a severe case of "Forest Envy" - I now understand the meaning of runnable forest.
For part 2, could we have Rocky and his ruby slippers fighting his way though chest high brambles, or running the wrong way through "runnable in one direction" pine forests, so it can be more relevent for East Anglia?
Is there a blooper reel, like when the car doesn't stop and Brooner goes flying across the bonnet?
I really like the written explanation of O on the flyers - can I put that on the new club website - with acknowledgements?
