This sounds like Mrs H's EVO- Extra Value Orienteering. She advocates the addition of things to do in the area on event fliers. I believe she is ensuring there will be activities for all at JK 2005 as well.

Yes, but seniors also know how ridiculous the vast bulk (meant in more ways than one!) of the orienteering population look in tight-ish lycra! The word 'cool' is not one that immediately springs to mind. Fine if you're very lean and fit....
but ye....from the original post i de think the biggest put off from 'o' is what we have to wear....i h8 it n run in a helly n my fell running bottoms when i can but dont really wanna rip them :s
I don't agree. Whenever I've done surveys on what turns people on/off orienteering (several occasions, various ages) the issue of kit simply doesn't come up. Actually, nobody has to run in anything in particular, which is part of the problem in getting decent kit - too many simply won't pay for it when they can run in any old dregs.

can't agree there Awk - kit comes up again and again - and although a lot of you may hate and deride the new HOC kit (Yeah i admit it I designed it) it has done a lot for forging a club indentity a long with the jackets which Nick barrable introduced during his time with us. The take up has been phenomenal and people wear them with some degree of pride because it makes them feel like they really belong to something - does any club cheer their people in like HOC - I really don't think so - it's because we can see who we are - (and we have a lot of very noisy people ) It may not be the super cool style we're talking about but it's not ultrasport and people have been happy to pay for them. I highly recommend clubs look at their own kit with a critical eye

I agree with Mrs H. Remember the days of TT Future kit? Was in big demand by the youngsters and we started a fashion trend with mess backed trousers. Kit look cool & created a distinct feeling amongst those who bought / used it. Problem is that with minimun production runs of 20 units plus print set costs & printing it becomes expensive & few clubs are willing to commit to it........
It all goes round in circles... I remember when I was a member of Ochils OK (anyone guess the date?) we were first club to get trendy Yngve Ek tracksuits... they were distinctive and worn with pride.
I actually think post race kit is more important than race kit... it's what gets seen by other orienteers the most... take the 2001 GBR kit for example... when athletes were out in the forest they had distinctive kit... back in the warmdown areas it was back to bog standard stuff.. didn't really stand out so much...
PS - Future Champions Cup name actually comes from TT Future kit... AWK will confirm:)

I agree about the kit being from HOC I use my kit in relays but on big events wear something different so I can slip in without being noticed, unless of course there is a run in competition and the run in is suitable for running!
Diets and fitness are no good if you can't read the map.

Happy to confirm that gross The sponsorship was a vital element in getting that competition going.
Don't get me wrong, I personally think kit is very important (witness the bust ups I've had with club committees on the subject!), and I agree with you gross that after event kit is very important, and badly overlooked (I certainly don't deride the HOC kit Mrs H. - especially the post event wear).
All I was saying that when actually surveying people for turn-ons/ offs, kit has not featured. That's a fact, not an opinion. It surprised me, which is why I remember so clearly. I wasn't trying to offer a viewpoint, just reporting something I found.

This post is degrading to elite orienteers, if easily offended do not read.
Gunnar and I have just been looking at the WOC photos and we've realised why there is no media interest. There aren't enough good looking people in orienteering. OK so there's Line Hagman, Minna Kauppi, Felix Breitschaedel, one of the Russian girls Natascha something who I admit are all stunning looking. And a few others who are quite attractive and after a few banquet beers and especially if they have the odd medal, you would. but in comparison to the general population there are a heck of a lot of uggers. We then played a game with Gunnar's 4 year old son to see if he could guess whether they were male or female from the picture. And he got quite a few wrong.

who is this harry of which you speak?
come on! it's true. ok, last skogsport cover, why have they cut the heads off the two hot bodies modelling the new swedish o kit? sex sells.
although.. the models were karro and emil who are reasonably easy on the eye anyway so maybe this isn't a good arguement.
hot snowboard types... please.
woc gold medalists, six to choose from after sunday

Please excuse the mutiple reply...
Indeed, but the old stalwarts that have always stepped in in the past are refusing to do so now, because the have other commitments.MarkC wrote:There seem to have been mutterings prior to your AGMs for years that you were about to fold
We agreed to buy some stock at the last committee if the club was still viable('thou' the treasurer may object - he wasn't at the meeting). The club needs to attract new members too. The response " we tried that in 198x and it didn't work so we're not doing it again" is heard far too often. Vision is nothing to do with SpecSavers.MarkC wrote:surely the club can scrape together the money to order a small kit stock so that the keen new members you're hoping to attract can buy some and feel part of the club as soon as they join?
I agree, which may be why others don't want to buy it in the first placeTrebor wrote:bad o kit
No, I like it and if our club folds, I want to join HOC just so I can wear itMrs H. wrote:a lot of you may hate and deride the new HOC kit

I just looked at some of the team pictures on the WOC site - you aren't half right!! Generally a big bunch of munters with the odd notable exception. And I know myself that billowing o kit doesn't do the curvier figure any favours...on the latest photos live from WOC there's an oriental blooke who looks about 50...it's not exactly cutting edge and extreme is it?
Will? We've got proper fire now!

just been watching mtb world champs on eurosport in the gym.
lets just say that they wouldn't generally win any awards for beauty either.
would anyone claim that mtb had an image problem?
maybe it's just because they've got lovely expensive equipment to drool over?
