nah, look at fell running - zero media interest and money (even less than orienteering I'd say), but seems to be surviving. OK, some of the classic long races have got declining (and aging) fields, and there is some debate in the sport as to what it needs to do to attract more (younger) people, or even whether to do so would be a good thing. Changing the sport/image to get media profile doesn't seem to be one of the options being considered, though...
