Standard of girls orienteering
Should you really be able to qualify for a world championship short race final by being over 10 mins behind the winner on a 25 minute course. The standard in girls orienteering is so low I think it's time to bring in pre-woc qualifiers in order for WOC to actually have some credibility and class in the girls events.

How come no junior girls get through and yet at least 2 junior men did? I would expect that since the standard of the women's race is lower then more juniors should get through the women's qualification than the mens.

Just had a look at the times behind - in men's C class you qualified if you were 7.29 behind the leader whereas in the women's B class you did not qualify if you were that far down. I know that those classes are the fastest for the women and slowest for the men but I think it highlights that the women's times aren't as bad as 10.34 - that was influenced by Jenny Johanson winning by 2.21!

Only reason for pre-woc qualifiers would be to improve the standard in the woc qualifying rounds, not the woc final.....and looking at the results, there are lower standard orienteers in the mens and the womens (who are all very welcome to come to woc in my book).
anyway theres no point in arguing with such a dumb ass - kitch's post said it all really.

They may all be welcome at WOC but I do feel that some nations should be allowed more runners than others (like the sprint in WOC 2001 where top countries had up to 3 runners while, for example Ireland only had 1 place) Seems wrong when potential WOC medalists can't get a run in qualifier!

I think it will go more open in a few years with the World Ranking system being more important... I can see the day when each country can only run one or two by right with the rest being made up of the top 50 in the World Rankings............ there has been talk about this.... but to work it does need a good World Ranking system:)

I'm sorry for being abrupt
but thats another daft point.
the reason you have qualifiers is so that every nation can put forward the same number of competitors. Through qualification the better nations will get more people through to the final, which is the race that counts.
If a "potential medalist" can't get a run in a qualifier then it because they do not have as much potential for a medal as the three team mates that got put in the race ahead of them, which on the face of it suggests they don't have potential for a medal atall ( 3 people than you = gold, silver and bronze, you are 4th).

If you could run forever ......

I agree with Andy.... in all sports in the World Champs you 'prequalify' by being selected to your national team.... ok so there are 50 Swedes with more 'potential' than another nation but that shouldn't give them automatic rights to enter WOC.
I personally think going down the road of using the World Ranking system as a bit daft... but that's what I think will happen:(

If our sport wants to gain credibility then at the World Champs only the best should be competiting. We should follow the lead of MTB and triathlon at olympics, they have pre-qualifiers, so the sport actually looks exciting and cool and very competitive, with sponsors and TV. No serious tv company or major company wants to sponsor orienteering, maybe because how cool is it to show a world champs with lots of girls (and boys) walking or jogging in the forest, not looking particularly athletic, calling itself a world champs....time for radical changes + time to stop wasting lottery money.

Where's the lottery money being wasted exactly? I'm not convinced there's any of our atheletes there we don't deserve to be. In fact, there isn't. They are all international standard athletes at the prime of their fitness. In orienteering it's all down to errors, which even the best make. Of course there will be time discrepancies, especialy in such a complex area. Sometimes they will be big gaps, sometimes small. It's the very nature of orienteering.
Paula was at one point so far ahead of the rest of the girls in the marathon that it made them almost obsolete. Should we have stopped them all from qualifying too?

did these peoples' participation in major events lessen the standard of those events in estimation of observers? I doubt it very much. It merely emphasised how very, very good the best people in the events were and the amount of talent, dedication and hard work required to get to the top level, and perhaps inspired a few people who realised that not being as good as the best is not something to be ashamed of.
on the other hand, spouting off on internet fora under a pseudonym may well be.
