I hurt my back on wednesday at work (assembly line in a factory) - muscular pain between shoulder blades and some lower back pain
I haven't run since wednesday night as it's been quite sore - was just wondering if anyone had any advice from a running point of view - am I right to stop running, will doing core exercises (crunches, pilates etc) help or hurt more?
Might go to see a doctor but have no days off at the mo so thought I'd ask the knowledgeable world of nope first!

No-one can diagnose or give serious advice over the internet. What follows is common sense.
Generally speaking - if it hurts. don't do it! At the same time, try to keep mobile - gentle movement (rather than serious exercise) is a good thing. Icing (holding a bag of ice or the proverbial bag of frozen peas on the affected area a few times a day) can be very helpful and taking ibuprofen can help too. Complete rest and immobility for muscular injury is out of favour - can cause more problems than it helps - but trying to ignore and train through an injury is plain stupid.
If you have real pain, swelling, deformity (even slight), have lost movement, can feel any "grating" when you move or have anything like pins and needles (in the area or beyond it) then seeing a doctor is essential and urgent and if it is not getting significantly better in a week then a doctor needs to have a look.

even more bolloks:) Unless you have access to a doctor who is interested in sports medicine it's a waste of time:) A visit to even an average physio is 10 times as good. And no it's not a theory from ignorance but from years of experience working with elite athletes....
Interesting to note that the first person Kelly Holmes mentioned in her list of thanks last night on TV was her physio - Ali Rose.... who also happened to be the team physio for GB orienteering some years ago

Hate to say it, but I agree with Gross!
Speaking as a doctor, GP's (in the majority) are hopeless with sports injuries and will just tell you to rest for months....
Finding a good physio is well worth it, and you'll find yourself visiting time after time. Ask other club members who they would reccommend.
Their waiting lists are shorter, their knowledge of injuries is superior, their treatment more effective, and if they think you need to see a doctor they will let you know. The only drawback tends to be cost, but worth it in the end!

Some places have special sports injuries clinics eg Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge, but it's only open on Mon, Wed and Fri mornings and only for injuries less than 48 hrs old, and you're not allowed to go if you have already consulted another doctor (even an uninformed GP). Never been, but I was told by a doctor who works there that they have physios, access to X rays etc.

I guess most areas run Sports Injury Clinics & there are also private practises about. In Stirling area there is physio Focus... initial appointment cost around £30 - follow ups £15.
Most University Sports Centres should also have some kind of support & back up for athletes.
If you can find a good physio - hang on to him / her as they'll build up a detailed knowledge of your history - both physically and mentally.

At the risk of being sworn at again I have to say something.
Differences of opinion, view or advice is the life of forums. Being irritated by someone or challenged in your own views makes forums buzz. Personal insults kill them. I object to being sworn at by someone I have never met and who can't look me in the eye while doing it. I have no problem with anyone disagreeing or arguing with me, or giving better advice, but I don't think it needs insults, especially spread across more than one thread. I would have pm'd this, but gross posts as a guest so I have to post publicly.
I happen to agree with gross's views about the value of physiotherapists but I stick by my advice. What sounds like a relatively minor work injury might well clear up in a day or two if it is kept gently mobile, not forced to work through pain and helped with some icing and maybe ibuprofen. If it is not improving or has any of the issues I listed, it needs investigating and it was SJ who mentioned a doctor - as others say, accessing a decent physio without going through a GP can be problematic and costly, at least in some areas, even though most (but not all) GPs are unskilled with sports injuries.

I personnally wouldn't classify b******s as swearing and if I did I guess I would also classify the terms CRAP and TURD as used elsewhere by Mr Curtis as swearing. On the subject of 'not the done thing' I suggest saying my opionions are born from ignorance is highly unacceptable:)
