Keeping cool
Apparently the best way to keep cool in hot and humid conditions is to put your hands in water at 15 - 20 degrees C. The British cycling team has been using this technique in Athens, on advice from Navy scientists. (I didn't know the Navy had scientists). Maybe a bit late for this summer but could come in handy next year.

Another tip gleaned from reading the sports pages when I should be working - Kelly Holmes starts her recovery at the post-race interview when Sally Gunnell brings her a bag of cashew nuts. Considering how many races she had to run in not many days there must be some value in it.

Phoenix weekend. 6 shirtless hours of blazing sunshine in the hills and a suntan to match.

Having just come back from Athens (don't mean to brag - but had SUCH A GOOD TIME!) I can confirm in was absolutely blisteringly hot. I can see why Paula was turning more and more scarlet by the minute. Think of running up a dual carridgeway in 35 degrees with no shade, and the tar melting underfoot. Yuck! The track and velodrome were pretty pleasant though.
