Spot on Housewife.
Belgian, get a grip !
you have a chance to go to WOC and compete for your country.
Take it, you may never get another.
You will run the sprint. run only the sprint, run to the very best of your ability in the sprint, make it count.
Hopefully Guest88 was being facetious in suggesting you do all 8 spectator races and getting your value for money. That would be utterly stupid.
WOC is about peak performance, the best result you can get. If you only have one race then you have a single focus and can put all your effort into that.
It is not about how many races you get to do.
If you do not think like this then you should not go to WOC, and you should never be in the Belgian Team.
Full WOC selections are up

Wasn't being facetious.
Our Belgian friend doesn't seem to be as motivated as anyone else around here about the chance to run for his country - and it was just a helpful idea for him only that might make it worth his while. Another idea is just to do spectator races following the world sprint champs.
I can see where you are coming from about WOC being about peak performance etc.
Points on Belgian's side of the argument are:
- sounds like he is going to be fighting it out in the nether regions of the Mens B Final (as he doesn't sound very motivated).
- it is his own money, unlike the people running for uk
- i would have imagined that we want as many nations / competitors as possible (olympic profiling etc), so we should generally try and encourage people to go even if they are not top-rate orienteers. (but this point is arguable)
Admittedly, our friend the Belgian didn't really help himself in his enquiries by suggesting that our sprint competitors are stupid. Like another poster, I immediately thought of people going to the Olympics to run 100m sprint.

the belgian is an idiot. If you get the chance to run a WOC, you should go for it, it may never happen again. I reckon it is much better to only run one race, as then you can just focus on it 110%, giving your all, not trying to save yourself for other races. And as for the money issue, nope that, the aussie team probably gets less funding than the Belgians!!! but i would pay any amount of money to make sure i am on the starting line for the sprint qualifer.

Ya, I would also spend money to compete for Britain at WOC - lucky us we have the money.
But there was a thread before on nopesport called "Russian WOC Fees" that tells us that many others would not pay "any money" to compete at WOC - and if you look at the entry list for WOC2004 it would seem to be fairly common.
I don't know how much money Belgian has, and his value judgements regarding running at WOC may well be different than the other posters on the site, but it is easy to forget the value of money when you live in rich country.

on the Belgian guys theme...
My faltmate has also been selected for WOC, however the fees are very high, and they will probably end up running just the qualifier and nothing else, and have to pay the same entry fee as someone running every race. a bit unfair on the poorer countries, or more to the point people from the poorer countries as they have to pay for their WOCs

The actual entry fee for WOC seems to be around £160. As a one off it is expensive but WOC is not a one off... it should come as part of an overall plan. It is not a sudden new cost... athletes from all over the world should have been aware of thier financial needs... as for the poorer countries well I agree that many seem to take fewer athletes / officials than GB etc etc and that the rich countries have an advantage here... eg. GB has entered 7 women but are only taking 6...

maybe i discribed it wrong. First of all,the selections that we've done didn't contain a sprint distance. so it's not because i'm good in sprints i have to run the sprint .
we did the selections in french terrain together with the french team. buth those who gained already an A-final ad eoc in Denmark were already selected. (2 of them did that just by hanging mats Troeng and Emil Wingstedt)
Belgian federatian thinks that when you are good in easy and fast terrain, like elgium and denmark , you must be good everywere.Buth didn't had even trainingcamps in sweden for 3 years,
there is one member of the team who's competing in the relay who's also running long and middle and he hasn't been in Sweden for 4 years.
I spend the last 3 summers in Sweden (oringen and trainingcamps with Sävedalen and Hällen)
I never specialised on sprint distances at all, and neither did Tom
Tom another flemish belgian already said he will not go for just running a sprint and so he wil not go to vasteras . Probably i'll go buth then i've to make progress on sprint races.
Maybe you can't compaire Belgium with the GB. You have those big icon's who are peforming well everywhere

I think what our Belgian friend is saying is more like "I was robbed of a classic/middle/relay place" than "sprint is crap". I'm sure a few uk runners if they felt similarly robbed and had to pay their own way may think about not going or even about quitting altogether.

maybe i mustn't complain this year i was just nr 144 in H21Lang , i just have to be motivated to pay 250 euros and focus for those important 20 minutes. Its so frustrated to know that the other belgians aren't better in sweden at all, maybe my 19 year younger brother can perform better in sweden ( he was 5the in H20Lang, and even got not selected in belgium for jwoc (stupid federaton again)).
Hopefully we have luck , and they can hang on some good runners
like in woc 2001 ( fabien pasquasy a belgianfirst starter in relay was together with jani lakanen ad the last spectaters control they were 1 and 2, 1minute before the rest of the field, at the end of the race fabien thought jani was running to slow so he ran away and made a mistake for 7 minutes)

I've just turned down my place in WOC this year - we have to pay 400 euro of the 900 it is costing for the 11 days and then pay our transport on top of that - I guess that means it would have cost me a min of 550 to 600 euro! I was selected for classic middle and sprint so it was a bit of a decision - if I had only been selected for 1 or 2 races then no way would I spend 600 euro per race! That said my decision was that I am not ready this year as I haven't spent the months in Sweden preparing (but that would have cost more with no subsistence for training). It is easy for all of you to say I would pay but there are times when you just can't! If the belgian WOC member says that it is costing him that much to go to WOC then he also would have had to pay for all the training in Sweden that he hasn't been able to do - maybe you believe that everyone going to WOC should be able to afford to spend 4000 each year because to prepare properly for WOC and to compete when you are there I recon that is what it costs!

and as bj pointed out to me, without the sprint we would have similar runners winning the classic, and it would be hard for the youngsters to break through
