Re: Coasts and Islands
Presumably it is full - it was extended beyond the original 100 limit.

The ‘Enter Here’ button is right at the bottom of the C & I page.

Re: Coasts and Islands
I've followed the links but it then says entries closed but on the start list it says 123 entries out of 200 (not 100) available... so I wondered!
Start list shows 122 entries though!

Re: Coasts and Islands
It says standard entries closed last Sunday. I guess they might reopen at a premium rate for late entries if they print a few extra maps? Or for a barebones organisation they might not want the hassle...

Entries will open again soon - we aren't sure why they are closed - it was a mistake!
It will be excellent.

If previous years are anything to go by it really will be excellent - assuming you like high qaulity, technically challenging, orienteering with a minimum of fuss, and of course amazing scenery.
Don't get carried away when you enter - short means shorter than the other courses it doesn't mean easy!

Re: Coasts and Islands
Calling courses "long", "medium" & "short" doesn't really help when working out which course to enter. It could mean
"green", "short green" & "very short green"
or it could mean
"M21E 90 minutes", "black" & "brown"
OK, the published course lengths probably rule out those extremes, but that still doesn't give much of an idea what we are letting ourselves in for.

The map snippets and terrain description give you a pretty good idea - its challenging and probably tougher technically and physically than the course distances suggest.

Re: Coasts and Islands
But how much tougher than who would expect?
The last black course I planned was 8.2 km. If the 9 km course on Achnamara is going to be tougher and longer than that then the medium course I have entered is probably too much for me.

Re: Coasts and Islands
Pete has a fair point. We have a perfectly good colour coded system. Why not use it?
From previous experience Long/Medium/Short roughly equate to Short Brown/Short Blue/Short Green long distance courses. However they usually are planned Middle Distance style and therefore might be better described as Black/Blue/Green Middle Distance courses.
Disclaimer: I have not looked at this year's details or have any inside knowledge...

Managed to enter now thanks all! Medium for me - I just copied Eddie who has been telling me I should go for years. I expected a discount for all the free publicity I have them but didn't get one... perhaps the "mistake" of closing the entries was a clever publicity stunt!
Really looking forward to it... sample maps look great.

About 1.2 times tougher than you would expect

Really?
Does 'Blue' tell you what to expect? it doesn't say anything about the technical challenge other than its as hard as the area allows.
The C&I courses tend to be planned to make best use of the areas rather than conform to any specific course profiles. This year there are two Middle races and a Long'ish race. I'd expect the 'middle' winning times to be longer than 35 mins.

So given the example of the 8.2 km black course in my post this would mean that "long" course is expected to take an elite M21 nearly 90 minutes.
Therefore the "medium" course will be too much for me and I need to swap courses.
Unless homer's expectation is closer - then a short blue "medium" course is just what I'm after.
