Planning and organising my first O event for a while this weekend and we have new lightweight control posts. These aren't numbered except start finish and clear.
The SI units which go on the posts are all numbered and the numbers are over 15mm high and 2mm thick.
Reading the BOF rules 21.1-21.3 I think this complies with the rules as a number of the appropriate size is visible from the punching station. Does anyone think I need to find some white duck tape and card and make numbers for the tops of the posts as well?
If control no is on unit does it need to be on the post too?

That rule has changed since I last read it. I am sure it used to say they must be vertical on the post, and gave 2 different sizes, one for the vertical numbers and a smaller one for numbers on the SI box.
Most events now only have them on the SI unit and as far as I am concerned that is fine, so long as any potentially confusing numbers e.g. 89 / 68 are underlined so you can know for certain which it is.

Thanks. I had a feeling that when I last planned an event they had to be on the post as well and was surprised there weren't any numbers. If they're not needed I won't bother adding them.

Re: If control no is on unit does it need to be on the post
I think the reason for numbers on the posts was that the standard sized numbers on the boxes (as supplied by SI) is too small. Getting big enough numbers such that you can put a 3 digit number on a small SI box is tricky, but it can be done.
It certainly makes it much much easier for the planner on the day if the stakes don't have numbers. You can carry more of them and you don't have to worry about making sure you have the correct stake at every site.

Minimum acceptable height of control codes displayed at controls has been reduced to 1.5cm - see British Orienteering rule 21.2 and IOF rule 19.6 - meaning that standard numbers on top of SI boxes should now be compliant.

I'm the planner at one of this years JK events and the control numbers will only be on the SI box. They comply with minimum dimensions so number on stake not required.

Likewise. Only on the unit at BOC / BRC 2024. Wouldn't surprise me if the old rules probably dated back to numbers written in felt tip pen on the kite itself, long before electronic punching and digital printing came along. Anyway, as several have said, 2024 rules have reduced minimum size, and it is perfectly possible to fit that on SI box.
