Next year Sean, next year!!
(assuming BOF don't organise another National Talent Squad training weekend to clash with the CSC thus ensuring the top 50 juniors in the country can't take part!)

Well, it seems that every Scottish Qualifying Round AND the National Final is ALWAYS on a half-term holiday weekend - please, please, please can we avoid this.

Why does whether or not schools are on holiday affect things?
Surely not everyone goes away *every* half term? If you do, how do you afford it?
Please let me know so I can look to have more than a single (cheap) holiday per year.....

Re: Compass Sport Cup / Trophy qualifying.
Rather than handicapping one possibility would be to have a gradual scale of team size, rather than a sharp cup/trophy cut off. Say 10% of club membership which must include counters from a minimum of 7 classes. The club score would be the average of the counting team.
There would be a single competition - so regional heats would have meaningful competition.
Very small clubs who struggle to put together a trophy team would be able to compete.
Very large clubs with big teams would not be so dominant - and more of their runners results would count.

Really interesting idea Pete. Definitely worth exploring.
No, not everybody does go away - but a high proportion of families with schoolchildren do. And then there are the teachers who are limited to those weeks too. It's why holiday companies stump the prices up so much - there's a guaranteed high demand. It's why so many families are prepared to put up with the £60-£80 fine per child in taking them out of school during term time - it's still cheaper than going away at half term.
As both parents and a couple working in schools, our main holiday breaks of necessity pretty much centred on October and February half terms, as it does for many families.

Re: Compass Sport Cup / Trophy qualifying.
I speculate that the answer to the 'why always half term' question involves something about the way big events need to be scheduled around other big events, which are often booked up years in advance.
With more flexible demographic requirement, clubs wont be penalised so hard if their limited numbers of juniors are away. Eg the results could be based on top N scorers, where at least one must be female and at least one must be junior. Any number on any courses.
But surely the answer to the problem is to make sure you are going on holiday to Accrington in October?

As the child of a school teacher, we had one holiday. For 2 weeks in the summer.
My point isn't that people go away in school holidays, it's that people seem to want to go away *every* school holiday.
And this seems to be a very middle class issue therefore.

And I know this isn't just an orienteering thing.
We have the same issues at hockey that people seem to want to go away every half term.
Flying off to wherever for skiiing or some other nonsense.
And we wonder why there is climate change....

Re: Compass Sport Cup / Trophy qualifying.
I don't agree. Some people might do that, but what this is about is that there are limited opportunities to take holiday, but a lot of different people wanting to take them. So, one can have a lot of people going away mid-term autumn, and a lot mid-term spring, none necessarily doing both.
As for a fortnight in August? Not affordable for a lot of people. Not necessarily doable either. For instance, for various personal reasons, we've not had fortnight's holiday for over 5 years now - but we do take shorter breaks.
Not everybody flies either. Or indeed goes skiing (quite a few orienteers though admittedly do go orienteering, which comes under 'other nonsense'!).
In other words - you're assuming/gneralising a lot.
