I know of a couple of people in my club over the years who have started orienteering in middle age and gone on to be picked for home internationals, so in answer to the 'what's the point' challenge there is definitely value in this. There is something about being picked for a prestigious competition that you can't get from doing well at even championship individual events. These late starters are a big potential market and if clubs focused more on recruiting and coaching to these age groups then maybe some of those 40+ years orienteers would have to fight harder for their place in the team
In future years, if these events and EOC are too complicated to keep going with a smaller sport, I hope they are replaced with other genuine team competitions at regional/national level to fulfil this need.

Club members selected to run in the Home Internationals can also be used to promote the club locally via posts on social media or articles in the local paper (if you still have one).
Our local runnng club gets lots of publicity this way as they have several runners who get selected to run for England in various Masters events.
