To me, that says "map the border between high traffic and low traffic areas", which I agree with.
I generally make my assessments of vehicle traffic danger based on what I can see, rather than the map. But it is also a long time since I ran a non-sprint urban.

I agree that it's helpful to enable competitors to identify and avoid potentially busy pedestrian precincts, but the way to do that is to map them with the darker "high traffic" 501: "50% [brown] for heavy traffic of vehicles or pedestrians".
Sadly, I think we're otherwise engaged for the Fat Rascal weekend, otherwise we'd probably be there for the sprint day. (I'm generally much less interested in longer urban races these days, probably because I'm now sufficiently unfit that executing long urban route-choice legs has become a bit tedious.)
