I was checking a club member's course before uploading to MapRun and pulled him up on some control descriptions. In particular:
He had described this as a path junction. I said that it was clearly a bend as there were only 2 lines away from the point, not 3 (junction) or 4+ (crossing). So I checked the IOF control descriptions which say that bend should be "Used where a linear feature makes a smooth change of direction" and a junction is "The point at which two similar linear features meet". His case was that as this is a right-angle change of direction, it is not smooth and thus is a junction. Radius of curvature and sharpness of direction are both on a continuum and it seems wrong to me that at some arbitrary point the control description will change.
Discuss.
When is a bend a junction?

Re: When is a bend a junction?
If the linear feature was a fence you would call it a fence corner, so why not a path corner ?

Re: When is a bend a junction?
It has since been pointed out that an example in the IOF document for ditches shows 90-degree bends (even though the path examples do not):
This example is pertinent because the original query came up because of another control being described as middle path junction whereas in my view it was eastern path junction (as the most eastern feature was in fact a bend). Distinguishing between similar features is why using path (NE inside corner) is not really practical.

Use whatever description you feel would be the most helpful to a competitor. To me path bend is the obvious choice.

Re: When is a bend a junction?
Well it certainly isn't a path junction - because that requires another path to join.
But it could be a hedge crossing or corner.
The map look to need some attention though. The dashes for the path shouldn't have rounded ends, and it would be better to have a dash point at the corner and a bit of separation from the hedges.

On the map shown it could be between the path ends!
(but seriously, path bend is best)

Does not really matter in this case, run the location (on the path) and you will find the control.
If you ran to the location on the map in a physical event, you would see the control kite.
Bend, Junction, Corner, End... doesnt really matter...with this type of control. Pick your fights, this isnt one of them as a controller.

but the competitor who blindly runs to the control and punches gains a possible slight advantage over someone who reads the CDs and is expecting a junction so is hesitant whether they are in the right place etc. I think if you need an explanation why technically the CD was "valid" then its not really been a useful tool - so why have them at all.MrD wrote:Does not really matter in this case, run the location (on the path) and you will find the control.
if you are picking fights as a controller you are probably doing something wrong. I've never found the discussions with a controller anything but helpful.Bend, Junction, Corner, End... doesnt really matter...with this type of control. Pick your fights, this isnt one of them as a controller.
