A couple of updates for oomap users:
1. Ollie O'Brien's site (https://oomap.co.uk/) has stopped working after a server upgrade so all traffic is being redirected to my server running an updated version (https://oomap.dna-software.co.uk/). The key difference is that to enable some enhancements, the automatic street-o preview has gone so don't panic if it looks different! Also of note: this is running on a small server at home so things may stop working/go wrong - please let me know if that happens.
2. One of my big enhancements was inclusion of LIDAR-based contours at 5m or 10m intervals. Following a recent release of new data, LIDAR coverage across England is very nearly complete (there's an odd gap around Fylingdales...). I'm hoping Wales will follow with updated data imminently.
This is probably a good opportunity to thank Ollie for building and then keeping his oomap server running for so long (since 2009). He introduced the ability to save maps in 2013 and we've worked to ensure that all these 10 years of saved maps are also available from my instance.

Re: OpenOrienteeringMap updates
Wales LIDAR now also updated - coverage is ~ 99% and most of the data is from 2020 to 2022.

Great, performance seems pretty good for a home server!

Re: OpenOrienteeringMap updates
I sent you a PM but you may not have seen it. A couple of observations / requests if I may :
1 OOM extracts hedges and walls from OSM but not fences. Might it be possible to include the extraction of fences ? I would be happy if these were rendered in OOM in the same way as walls, to avoid tags causing confusion / adding clutter. I can cheat by changing from fences to walls in OSM, but when I tried that within 30 minutes I received a complaint from another OSM user. (There is precedence for multiple OSM tags rendered the same as one another in OOM e.g. OSM tracks are rendered in the same way as minor / residential road (solid black line); happy with that.)
2 OOM extracts power lines from OSM. This can add clutter / confusion. Would you consider NOT extracting power lines ?
A couple of examples in the attached; I have forgotten how to embed images in the message.

Re: OpenOrienteeringMap updates
This needs some care. When OOM first came out it worked well, but as more and more detail is added to OSM (for valid reasons) OOM is becoming less usable. Where I am, every individual property boundary is mapped, mainly with hedges. So the OOM map is already overly cluttered, even in Street-O format, significantly increasing the ink requirement and making course 'overprints' more difficult to read.
Is it possible to make these and similar features (inc. power lines) individual options? So users can include or exclude them depending on how much detail is included on OSM in their area?
Edit: or perhaps to exclude them when surrounded completely by other private/OOB terrain?

Re: OpenOrienteeringMap updates
KP - no PM here?
1. Fences - they *should* be rendered by default - I'll recheck the logic.
2. Power lines - yes, I can add an option to exclude.
Snail - your observations ring true. The mapping detail does vary from place to place and for some areas driveways, hedges, etc can completely swamp the map. That's why I added the "Rendering Options" dialogue - see the help page at: https://oomap.dna-software.co.uk/help/d ... g-options/
In short you can choose whether or not to render most of these items already.
So, to cover both your comments I hope - I will add power lines to the list of render-or-not options, and check what's happening for fences.
At least for now I'm not going to try to do more complex tests of whether items are completely surrounded by OOB - too many ways this could go wrong I think!

Fences now back (and optional); power lines now also optional.

Re: OpenOrienteeringMap updates
I wonder if it is possible to add the OSM tag "man_made=cutline" to the Open Orienteering Map "render optional features" list. It is how OSM map forest rides and they are usually easily detectable from aerial photographs. I think that IOF symbol 508 is "narrow ride" ?
There is a bit on the OSM wiki about "cutlines" on here ;

I've added to the list of requests:
https://github.com/oobrien/oomap/issues
Worth noting though that oomap has never looked to be a generic mapping solution and is focussed on urban areas - so this won't make it high priority unless there's a good reason for seeing rides on street maps,

Re: OpenOrienteeringMap updates
I was adding some new map features to the PseudO style (rock, scree, water points, orchard, vineyard) so I took the opportunity to add these forest rides too
Currently rendered as light yellow strips.

Re: OpenOrienteeringMap updates
I'd like to simplify the user interface a bit while adding support for custom map scales and potentially paper sizes too. To that end, I have a test page set up:
https://oomap.dna-software.co.uk/index2.html
Any strong feedback for/against this tweak?
Thanks, David
