I was about to renew my Avanti Travel Insurance so read the policy documents. Although orienteering is in the list of accepted activities there is a total caveat of not for competitive participation. (what other sort of orienteering would there be?).
Can anyone recommend a travel insurer that definitely does cover orienteering ?

Co-Op used to be OK quite a number of years ago; have not checked recently.

I generally look for one which does not exclude competitions. However, when I lived in Hong Kong, most of the travel insurances on the market there exclude competitions. Some allowed if it was an amateur race on foot for leisure (which foot orienteering satisfy but not, e.g. MTBO), but if it was for a world championship in the national team it wouldn't cover as well.
Also, I was looking for travel insurance which would cover my amateur marathon swimming competitions as well and those mentioned above wouldn't cover as well, as they were not on foot.
Now I normally use SportsCover Direct as my travel insurance provider which provides policy for most sports, including some extreme sports.

I've used Sportscover Direct for many years; they cover competition and the price is the same whatever pre-existing medical conditions you may have (although they might refuse to insure you or change the excess). They cover orienteering as "Group 0" which includes other such hazardous activities as Ballroom Dancing, Darts and Yoga

SCD are a bit expensive
I always use Liverpool Victoria as much cheaper:
https://www.lv.com/travel-insurance/activities-covered
So it says on the webpage that "There's no cover under this policy for any sporting activity where money is paid to you to take part, or for any kind of manual work." - no mention of competition
As long as you are not competing for GB or England, I don't believe there is a problem with the competition aspect regarding a normal punter entering an event, but i am not an adviser on insurance etc etc etc so please do your own research, and own checks.

One thing to mention about SCD is that they also offer "add on" insurance for where you already have a standard policy (e.g. those that come free with some bank accounts) but want to add cover for competitive sport. This can be particularly attractive if you're doing, say, a couple of days orienteering as part of a longer trip because you only need to buy the extra cover for those two days.

Not when I looked (and with my specific medical conditions): £24 for a week in Europe with SCD, more like £80 for LV. Maybe the balance is different if you're younger or don't have any medical conditions.

Yes, it does seem that for a single week of orienteering, or annual multi-trip if you only specify "orienteering", then the SCD policy does come out cheaper than the LV one.
I generally look for an annual multi-trip policy covering skiing, rafting and orienteering (worldwide excluding NA). For this SCD quotes £342 (with a 35 day trip limit) - hence why I think of them as being very pricey, whereas the LV Premier policy only costs around £115 , and seems to cover all of those things, and many other adventure sports besides, with a 90 day trip limit.

Maybe it means doing Ballroom Dancing, Darts and Yoga simultaneously (now that's a new Saturday TV format!). Just as orienteering has been described as doing Sudoku while fell-running.

I can now answer that, as I made a claim for travel delay caused by the French ATC industrial action. It was paid without problems, though a bit slowly; 4 days from phoning to get the email claim form, then about a month in a queue as they process claims in chronogical order. After that, it was accepted and paid within a week. To be fair, that period did include the Easter bank holidays, and it's possible that all the strikes and so on gave rise to more claims than usual.
