Anyone know if ranking points are awarded for mass start races? I thoughts they weren't for obvious reasons.
I noticed that they had been awarded for the Edinburgh Big Weekend classic race which I thought had mass starts on Brown and Blue.

Re: Rankings and Mass Start Races
There was a mass start on the longer courses at Holyrood, but they didn't involve the entire field, and it's probably too difficult to filter out the mass-starters from those who ran solo.

Re: Rankings and Mass Start Races
Mass start races are supposed to be excluded. I believe the theory is something to do with the distribution of times being odd compared to a time-trial and that skewing the scores, but I suspect graeme or djm will be better able to provide the details.
If there is a course where some runners are in a mass start and some aren't, the simple option would be to mark the mass-start runners as non-comp for the purposes of uploading the results to the British Orienteering website.

Yup, that's the theory. We also looked at the facts which show it isn't true, but the theory won the day.

Re: Rankings and Mass Start Races
The theory was more about skewed results than about differently skewed distributions. By "skewed results" we meant the increased possibility of strong runners but weak navigators getting a tow to untypically high positions and hence untypically high rankings points.
And, since mass start events come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, "looking at the facts" is not easy to do! A lot depends on how much and how effective any course splitting methods are for instance.
