Lakeland Warrior is back again for another weekend of high-quality racing, primarily aimed at elites but others welcome too. Bilbo has some more freshly mapped (with lidar) South Lakes forest up his sleeve!

Re: Lakeland Warrior - 3/4th Dec 2022
WRE status confirmed for both races.
Saturday PM middle on Great Tower.
Sunday AM middle on a new bit of map near Graythwaite.
Just because it's WRE doesn't mean general non-elites can't enter too!

Two TD5 courses, short or long. How short is short ? "Asking for a friend", as they say.

does that (and the wording on the web page) sound like "we don't want you there but we'll make more money if you come" ?

Re: Lakeland Warrior - 3/4th Dec 2022
To me it reads more like "non-elites are welcome but there will be only two course, both of which will be as tough as we can make them - here are some map snippets indicating just how hard that might be - so if that doesn't suit you then you might want to give it a miss"
...which seems entirely straightforward and reasonable, unless one feels every event has to provide for every possible standard of competitor regardless of the extra organisational burdens that might entail.

I guess anything can be be read in multiple ways. Personally, I read this as being open to anyone wanting and comfortable undertaking a tough orienteering challenge. i.e. it's not a colour-coded event, but anyone who is interested in what it is will be welcome.

Presumably they will correspond to elite middle distance courses for men and women - which would be black & brown at a colour coded middle event.

You could maybe write their copy for them; your explanation is much clearer!

Re: Lakeland Warrior - 3/4th Dec 2022
Sorry for the confusion, I'll attempt to explain:
There's been 4 or 5 previous weekends like this in the last 2 or 3 years and they've all been marketed as elite-only (although that label hasn't been too strict).
This is mostly to reduce the workload on the planner (number of courses and controls), organiser (parking, toilets, enquiries etc etc) and general helpers too.
So in that sense, this is a small step away from the elitism of past weekends. (Although one could argue that a few elite-only weekends aren't a bad thing, there are plenty of beginner-only events).
But in keeping with the theme of reduced organisation, yes there are only 2 courses: with 30-35min winning times for an elite man and woman respectively (so probably 5.x and 4.x km). Whilst these might feel like more of a long distance for some competitors, all are welcome to rise to the challenge! Basically, Patrick is right.
We haven't really thought about what to do if we're overloaded with hundreds of entries, maybe just extend the start block, not sure. Hope that helps.
p.s. Atomic mentions money. Obviously if we make more money the event is more likely to continue in future.

It's a middle distance world ranking event. More details than you can possibly want is here...
https://orienteering.sport/calendar-of- ... -for-2022/
Basically, "what Patrick said". 30-35 min winning time, As technical as it can be, No compromise for physicality. Extensive quality control on maps and courses. Anyone can enter. Unranked competitors (and men on the women course) start first.

Re: Lakeland Warrior - 3/4th Dec 2022
I'm intrigued - do all these references to WRE rules mean that we'll actually be getting 1:10k maps? Happy to be corrected, but I think previous Lakeland Warriors have all had 1:7.5k, even for the long(er) races.
It's not entirely a facetious question - while a lot of people (including me) would strongly prefer 1:10k and will be excited to get some practice in ahead of JK2023, I imagine there will be some older potential entrants who may struggle to read 1:10k and for whom the scale will be a material factor in deciding whether or not to enter. It would be good to know either way.

To answer Scott's question on scale: both myself and the IOF advisor have a preference for 1:10,000, for the reasons you mentioned - rules compliance and JK 2023 practice. At a WRE we feel this should take priority over the eyesight of any older competitors.
However, I believe you may be correct on most previous editions using 1:7,500. This is because they can be laser printed (cheaper and simpler) and still be readable. The planner has seen a sample with 1:10 laser printing and it's sub-optimal. So, it looks like we may need to fork out on offset litho printing (which it should be by IOF rules anyway).
Anyone got any good offset litho printer recommendations?

As an oldie, I'm hoping 1:10k offset proves to be as readable as 1:7.5k laser.
