Re: Compass Sport Cup 2023
That is interesting, there was a yellow option though which no longer exists. Always struck me as odd there was no light green - you get M/W14s who run Greens on a normal weekend dropping down two levels to Orange.frostbite wrote:I found an old compass sport with the rules and draw for 1990. At that time there were 6 classes
A (Brown) M21
B (Brown) M17 M19 M35 M40
C (Blue) W19 W21 M45 M50
D (Red) M13 M15 W15 W17
E (Green) M55 M60 M65 W35 W40 W50 W55 W60 W65
F (Yellow) M10 M11 W10 W11 W13
3 runners count per club on each class
At least one counter on E to be 50+
Interesting that there were no technical options for juniors below 19 for girls or 17 for boys.
was there? how does it compare to previous years (before covid) - no of clubs and no of runners? Why is more clubs bad?awk wrote:Fair point - but then I think there are too many clubs in the final anyway. Silly numbers this year.

For those who like playing with numbers, there's a lot of information about previous years here:
http://pgorienteering.uk/compass-sport-cup-archive.html
For example, 2018 on Cannock Chase had 11 clubs in the Cup and 15 in the Trophy.

Re: Compass Sport Cup 2023
I can confirm 191 was in the correct place. I came to it from various directions, and on Saturday when I was actually checking the control kites, I took a bearing from 191 to a control nearby. I set the bearing and looked up in the direction and could actually see the control dead on the line.
The area where most of the 1st controls were was probably the hardest bit of the course, as you are not at that point in tune with the mapping of the vegetation so are not in the flow.
I thought the Planner did a superb job with the courses, ensuring you were having to adapt your technique throughout the course.

I would certainly agree with that, having sped up in the easy bit and promptly lost 30 sec. People always underestimate how difficult it is to change technique (Hello Tero )! Yes, it was rough, but as a competitor, its hard to know quite how much rougher it could have been. But I suspect, quite a bit!

Personal opinion. It means having to run more courses, more complexity etc etc. I don't know how it compares with other years, and not really bothered. Also seems silly to me to have a final where all the teams from qualifying events get through.
But then, probably best ignoring my thoughts: I've obviously fallen out of love with the whole competition - feel it's overly biased towards the bigger clubs, is too complex, and distances looking to be too far. Hopefully others are not so inclined, and the discussion above certainly suggests I'm in a minority.

Well some of those things work against each other.
If you wan't fewer clubs in the final and more competition in the heats then you have to have fewer qualifying heats covering more clubs. And those heats will of necesity have to be further apart.

What's the matter with a big final? My club made a fantastic weekend out of it - it was a long way from East Anglia but they made it and ran their socks off. Oh and one class winner - what's not to like?

Agree with that. We Eborienteers had a great time with great forest/planning/weather/organisiation... and we didn't win anything!

For anyone north of approx. the M62 it will take longer to get to next year's final than this year's.

Fair comment!

Yes, you're right (of course!). Thinking about it, it isn't the size of the final per se, more to do with the fact that in some cases (mainly if not altogether in the Cup), there was pretty much no point to the qualifiers.

As we did at the qualifiers Ebor organised last year! I hope its clear that nothing I've been trying to discuss has been about 'winning'.

There is an interesting point. Do we actually need qualifiers? Do they add to the overall value of the Cup or just a burden for organisers etc? Or is the income enough to make it something you would want.
It could be left to each region to decide if / how they want to organise their own qualifier. This is the situation in Northern Ireland although the consequence seems to be they don't usually send anyone. What if each region was just entitled to send say 2 cup teams and 2 trophy teams? They could pick them out a hat, run a qualifier, use scores at a regional champs etc to decide. Or even, assuming bigger is better for the final, any team could turn up?
OR if you want a radical overhaul of the approach - stop basing cup and trophy on membership numbers and create perhaps 3 levels. Progression between the levels would be by promotion / relegation. So the "worst" 2 teams in the top level would be relegated to the mid tier, the best 2 mid tier teams would be promoted. The worst 2 mid tier teams would be demoted and all the clubs who are not in either the mid or top tier would have a "lower tier" competition to pick two teams to promote. Criteria in each tier for scoring points could be different like it is with cup/trophy (probably tweaked). Not entering a team of a minimum size would see you demoted.
Would it be better? Who knows. I'm not actually convinced the current approach is broken.

Re: Compass Sport Cup 2023
I like all the potential formats you suggest!
Years ago (round about the millennium when I was working for BOF?) I suggested a promotion/relegation format that ignored club size too, but it wasn't taken up. I still think something along those lines would provide much more interest/incentive.
