The first control is less than 150m away from the start in open terrain and you could see the feature and control flag from 75m away.
There were just 7 first controls across the 14 championship courses and 6 were very much in the same direction. This explains the very obvious unmapped path up the hill from the start that nearly everyone was taking; I hear from the start team it wasn't there to begin with. As a later starter I found it confusing as I didn't realise it was unmapped.
