The very good reason for this is that it makes distance judgement much easier for the competitor: if I am at the edge of the circle then I know that I am 37.5m from the control, whether the map is 1:7,500 or 1:15,000. I don't need to mess around with the lines on my compass, do any mental arithmetic or try to remember what it said in the final details.
So would you have preferred 15mm circles on Saturday in "Mesopotania"?
