Hi, been a while since I've posted on here. Can't find any discussion on this previously.
Looking at using oomap to generate a simple base map, and then hoped I could use Strava Heatmaps (or GPX tracks) somehow to overlay and mark out paths and well used routes for a couple of areas that aren't maybe suitable for foot O, but maybe fun for MTBO.
I don't have access to OCAD, so only other option I have is Open Orienteering Mapper for creating an actual map using correct symbols etc.
Any ideas on how I could maybe do this, or any better options?

OOM uses data from open streetmap:
https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=9/54 ... 6&layers=C
You can edit this to plot the tracks you want to show - and things such as vegetation. After a delay they will appear on OOM, which may well be good enough for your event.

I have used but OCAD and OpenOrienteeringMapper.
They do the same job. In many respects they are similar. I find each is better / easier in some respects and the other way round in other respects. Both become easier with practice.

I think if you are not familiar with either and only mapping occasionally then Open Orienteering Mapper is probably more intuitive to use than OCAD.

Re: Mapping Without OCAD
Hi
The best way to go about this is to export the KMZ from OOMap and import into Open Orienteering Mapper (download the software which is free).
It has to be imported as a Template and I normally set the Map Co-Ord system EPSG to 3857, I think that is right but I've lost my notes! (edited)
Then you have a georef map where you can import GPX and many other things such as Lidar contours other base maps etc.
OOMap (Streetmap) and Open Orienteering Mapper (similar to OCAD) sometimes get confused with each other!

Wow this looks particularly comprehensive, thanks! I'll make some time to read this.
Thanks for other responses too!

Re: Mapping Without OCAD
Quick Q.
For various boring reasons (£££££), I'm getting some people to try and learn how to use OOM to compliment our mapping using OCAD.
It's also meaning I'm having to learn some OOM....
Quick Q for any OOM users out there. Can you rubber sheet maps like you can in OCAD? E.g. if a map is distorted/wrong scale or you want to fiddle with things, can you do affine transformations like in OCAD?
I can't find anything in the OOM manual for rubber sheeting of affine transformations. So wisdom of the crowds it is.

In a word....no.
Mapper is, perhaps, easier for beginners to pick up than OCAD but is not capable of doing rubber sheeting. If a map is the wrong scale or distorted it can sometimes be quicker to start again especially if you have LiDAR available rather than trying to correct possibly random errors in the original.

Re: Mapping Without OCAD
Ok, thanks.
I've got a map that just needs a uniform transformation as someone's done it at the wrong scale (they're just learning, so easy mistake to make) and rather than them redo it, I thought I could just do a simple transformation, but obviously not.
What I will do is export it to OCAD, transform, then export back to OOM, rather than them do it from scratch.

Re: Mapping Without OCAD
QGIS3 (free) should be able to do this with its georeferencer tool?
