Very exciting racing today in the World Cup Middle - not sure I've seen so many mistakes by the leaders in a world cup race.

Lots of pack running - but packs also splitting up and some parts going horribly wrong...

Looked like the planner had given up for the last few km and run out of tricky stuff but apparently easy legs caught a lot of them out. Maybe something strange with the map?

Re: World Cup Round 2 - Sweden
Going to be controversial here, but what do you think of the moves by the IOF to try and "grow" the sport in developing countries, by allowing athletes with no world ranking to compete in the World Cup?
We already saw at the World Championships the Egyptian who had to be snagged out of the terrain, having taken four hours to get through one control. Now we have the Colombians, taking five hours for the Long and the best part of four hours for the Middle.
Should there be some sort of competence test before you're allowed out on your own in a World Cup race?

Free GPS tracker for the relays, with the men's first leg halfway round and the women to follow.

Are Sweden 1 and 2 on the same gaffle!?

I suspect the planner was hoping runners would let rip after several shorter legs in intricate terrain. 15 was fast running and slightly downhill. Many dropped 2 or 3 contours too many and either went up, losing time, or decided to overshot and relocate on the path losing even more. The next two were faster still, across slopes dropping to similar features, and when runners missed they realised too late relocaction wasn't easy. Subtle legs, with a big price to pay, and many of the best blew it.buzz wrote:Looked like the planner had given up for the last few km and run out of tricky stuff but apparently easy legs caught a lot of them out. Changes are what make orienteering tricky - so a change from short legs with intricate contours to long legs with smooth, bland contours is a major change and it worked - planner 1, runners 0

Re: World Cup Round 2 - Sweden
The one feature of the maps that was a bit hard to read was the variation in runnability of the "white" forest. It was a lot more varied than it looks. Some areas were relatively dense while others were almost open. The siting of the controls was often a bit hidden so it was quite easy to run past a control without seeing it.
Regarding the Colombians, I don't think anyone had an issue with their participation. In fact, I think it was quite the opposite. I had a long chat with their coach (a FInn). This was their first visit to Europe so the fact that they got around the courses was a result in itself. They weren't helped on the long by the fact that they had southern hemisphere compasses. They managed to borrow more suitable compasses for the remaining races but it was cold and very wet for the middle and I think they were defeated by the terrain in the relays. They have just regained control of their association after years of management by non-orienteers (more interested in votes on the Olympic commitee) so the sport is only just starting to regain ground in the country.
