Re yesterday's BO email about hackers accessing bank details of those who pay membership by direct debit.
Any time you write a cheque (remember those?) that person has your account number and sort code so I'm not sure the exposure is that serious. Indeed many companies publish theirs to facilitate payment by bank transfer.
As the email says, the hackers could set up a bogus direct debit but surely the bank would have to reimburse you.
Am I missing something?

Which? has some good guidance here. Your bank will reimburse you for direct debits if you are an innocent victim of fraud, but only if you spot it and make a claim within 13 months of the money leaving your account.

Re: BO hacked
It doesn't seem to have affected everyone who pays by DD?
Is that a bit strange?

Re: BO hacked
As suggested by British Orienteering's e mail to those they believe may have been most exposed, I have spoken to my bank. I checked through all my direct debits with them and was told by their fraud team that they could"count on the back of their hand" the number of times they have seen an attempt to set up a direct debit as a result of this type of activity.
In addition, they said that hackers sometimes contact banks with the information in an attempt to get fraudulent services, but because I have mine set up with personal security numbers that the hackers could not have accessed, this would not succeed. (many years ago they played me back a recording of a person who tried to impersonate me to get a new debit card sent to them, and it was a strange experience to hear her fail the extra security)
So advice was to keep an eye on-line on the account I use for direct debits and to also check my credit rating occasionally, in case there had been activity using the details they may have obtained.
But overall they were very re-assuring, especially because of the extra security that surrounds my account. So hopefully that's the end to it. But still a massive headache for British Orienteering.
