Sad news about the death of Martin Hyman.
A largely unsung hero of British Elite orienteering who established the senior squad and ran it for 2 decades. He had a huge influence on the development of the British team and was largely instrumental in the medals won in WOC '93 and subsequently.
He was a fine coach, a great leader of people and, above all, a wonderful person.
He will be sadly missed by all who were influenced by him during his long career.

+1.
Not forgetting his input as an event organiser from the mid-1960s. Plus of course his previous athletics / Olympic achievements.
RIP

I last saw him about 4 years ago helping with car parking at the Hodgson Brother's mountain relay. He was sharp as ever and remembered me despite my brief period in the senior squad over 20 years earlier. I have a lot to thank him for in that brief period.
RIP Martin.

Re: Martin Hyman
Certainly the most inspiring person I ever met in running and orienteering. Quite astonishingly knowledgeable, approachable and inclusive. Martin pretty much invented the British Orienteering Squad, and was was still coaching juniors a week before he died.
His "Meadows" intervals session ran every Tuesday at 7.55: 5 reps starting every 6mins, suitable for everyone because you chose your own rep distance. In that session, I've run the distance from here to Timbuktu.
His running PBs were faster than anyone in the Squad (actually, anyone in the UK at 10k in the last year, despite cinders vs vaporflys), which lent some credibility to what he said!
Already sadly missed.

Re: Martin Hyman
A good story is of his setting out for a warm up run at the first squad weekend and turning round after a few minutes to find no-one there - they couldn't even handle his warm-up pace

Re: Martin Hyman
A huge feeling of emptiness knowing we won’t see Martin around again. Everything felt better after a chat with him.
I first met Martin when I was 13 when I asked him for some training advice at a local young athletics match. The next day, he came out to my local area to help me find nice places to run (away from the council estate) as well as sharing his training philosophy. The 3 page summary he sent me that same night formed the basis to my training to this day. However, it was his advice and guidance on life that proved most invaluable over the years.
Very lucky and a privilege to have been his friend
