Like most people (I assume) I received the virtual AGM voting form the other day.
I was surprised to see a proposal to nominate Steve Cram as new 'president' for BOF (replacing Chris Bonington).
Steve is by a long way my favourite athletics commentator but I didn't know he had any links to orienteering. There is a 'supporting statement' saying he has 'so many memories of belting through forests...' implying he's a regular.
I'm not entirely clear of the purpose of the 'president' but then having a well-known figurehead could be great, if he actually uses his platform to promote orienteering!
What does everyone think?

Re: New BOF president
Interesting choice.
I got the impression his orienteering was when he was a lot younger!
We had a good group of student orienteers at Tynemouth College in the mid 1970s, and I think Gosforth Grammar School was thriving with John Crosby. There were several clubs North of the Tyne, but can anyone remember what was happening South of the Tyne?

Steve Cram went orienteering in late '70s (maybe a bit later) and presented a TV programme about orienteering in Hamsterley Forest. This might have had him introducing a "personality" to O, but I can't be sure.
Sorry can't remember anything more definite about it...

Anneka Rice (unfortunately Billy Connelly chose the horse riding option).

The name Anneka Rice came into my head but I couldn't find any evidence so didn't add that bit

Re: New BOF president
In October 1977, local lad Steve Ovett opened the Southdowns Orienteers permanent course in Stanmer Park. So I'm guessing SO president Dave Thompson had something to do with it!
Steve also holds the course record for the now defunct Southdowns 10 (miles, circuit from Portslade along the Downs), organised annually by SO.

This post perplexed me so I had to do a bit of research. Steve Ovett holds the record for the Southdowns 10, and I guess he is a bit more of a local.
The event at Hamsterley was the October Odyssey. My dad started at the same time as Aneka so he got about 2 seconds of screen time. iirc Steve Cram knew Steve Murdoch (same athletics club I think) and did actually do a bit of orienteering on his own account.

Easy mistake to confuse names, in an era when UK world class middle distance runners were two a penny. Still we ain't doing too badly of late indoors.drobin wrote:Ooops! In October 1977, local lad Steve Ovett opened the Southdowns Orienteers permanent course in Stanmer Park.

The info from BOF about the AGM says he is stepping down and has nominated Steve Cram.

Re: New BOF president
I was intrigued so I checked the BOF Articles of Association about the role of President.
It mentions the role needs to be appointed at the AGM, but it doesn't say a word about what the role actually does. Mind you, neither does it describe the responsibilities of the Chief Executive.
Does anyone actually know what the role of President entails?

Is it not an "honorary" role - so just a figurehead rather than actively involved. Anyway Steve Cram would be great for some publicity - if we can market it properly...
