OK, this is a junior topic, so if someone wants to redirect this on the junior forum, please do.
Quote from editorial in the RC5 I've just received: "I challenged people (via a well known website) to provide me with copy written by them and you know what happened - I was inundated..........with silence". (Although congratulations to Paul Hutton for his article on the World Schools')
Having been in the same position as the editor (Hilary Palmer) in the past, I know how frustrating this can be - loads of promises but no actual results. Given the tons of things going on this summer, how about inundating Hilary with loads of material for the autumn issue? Her email address is hilarypalmer@britishorienteering.org.uk
On the subject of RC5, there is no doubt in my mind that the lack of captions to the photographs is a massive negative. Even when it isn't an issue (Graham and Mhairi CAN have their names attached - see page eight) they seem to have been missed off. I'm sorry to see the strip photos at the bottom have been binned - there just seems to be a overload of white space instead. I also (violently!) object to the constant use of club acronyms. It's all very well for the cognoscenti, but the vast majority of recipients have no idea who "NOC" or "WCH" etc are. Publications like this should be using club names not "in the know" abbreviations!!
Anyway, good to see junior coverage increased and the Search element put on the back page.

does this mean u go tthe new one this morning?
i fully agree that you juniors should flood hilary with plenty of stories, they dont have to be long, go for it. i tried to get people to do this fr the summer issue, but unfortunately no results. go on, make the magazine your own, and make hilary's difficult job a wee bit easier.
captions - im not sure why we need to go over this again. we cant do it. the omission of the ones that CAN go in was a continuity thing.
photo strips - these have been 'binned' in an effort to bring the mag into the 21st century. white space is whats its all about. the idea is to make the mag look a little more like the kind of mags juniors are reading outside of O. it is my opinion that the way to recruit and keep juniors to the sport, is to 'normalize' it as much as possible, and make it similar to other sports and activities juniors are doing. make it cool. im sure juniors like to see photos of themselves and their mates, but what other magazine have you ever seen in that style? there are still many photos in the magazine, and of a generally higher quality. im sure i will be told many times over now that i am wrong. we shall see.
acronyms - you probably have a point there, although there are space issues there.

I take your point. The only think is it doesn't look anything like the mags that my son gets, which seem to have loads of pictures and not a lot of white space. They also use far more 'modern' typefaces (at least they look modern to me!). But there again, it might be me being so old as to remember the last fashion cycle: the new RC5 reminds me most of the old 'Orienteer' before it was absorbed into Compass Sport back in the 1970s.
But please do remember, these are the comments of an M45 - so don't take them to heart, as I'm not the market being aimed at, and if that's what is 'new', then don't mind me! They are also relatively minor, outweighed by the positives.
On the captions front, and in danger of going over old ground: one can still have meaningful captions without mentioning names.

I think the photo strips at the bottom of each page were a brilliant idea - I don't know how many other people spent time hopefully looking through searching for themselves amongst the crowds of people in each picture! They're fun to look at, create a bit of interest on the page, and provide a way of including lots more orienteers who are not one of the elite few privileged to have a main article about them.

AWK mentions font, it does look a bit too old, should go with a sans serif one - arial would be nice.
I know black and white pics keep it cheap (and they go with the purple white colour scheme) but they're a bit drab. Page 2 and 3 spread has no pics, just colums of text (except Olis top tips) - its too formal.
Bring back the bottom pic strip
Search could do with standing seperate a bit more - the old yellow sheme worked well

how about a junior article on the oringen, contributed to by several juniors. there were pleanty of us out there, so we could each be responsible for a day, and then someone does the party, opening ceremony etc. only a short paragraph would be needed from each person then.
just an idea

even just for any race, use the junior forum to collect comments on a race or whatever and it can easily all be combined into an article. i'm sure it would be much better to read something that someone you age has written and knew what they were talking about (especially in the cases of race reports etc) than someone looking at it from an adult perspective.

i don't like the pink, red maybe instead - or orange (very 'o')
and i like the quotes section, but i'd rather know who said them (is that against child protection too?) maybe a quotes bit on the o ringen?
suprised to see john d's masterclass was mentioned but not the rest of the jircs? any reason for this?

Good idea - the articles in the past that have been quote based seem to have been really well received, and this is a great source. Needs somebody to do it though.

if we just set up a topic for comments for RC#5 after big events, then hilary could dip into them and use them how she wants.
I think its important to have a balance of properly written articles and short comments, to give the mag some variety. Nopesport is a great way of doing that.
