I would like to thank all those who put on post-lockdown events last year. They made life more bearable. And an even bigger thanks to those who worked really hard to redraft risk assessments and protocols, get permissions, produce maps, plan, control and organise only to have their events called off through no fault of their own.
I particularly enjoyed the two AIRE events, both on areas I’ve visited lots before and both held in torrential rainfall but each came at just the right time after months (Roundhay in August) or weeks (Harden Moor in December) of lockdown. They reminded me how much I love slipping and sliding down steep muddy slopes and wading across streams in spate.
There were several new areas to me. Two events over a weekend in August near Whitby (and we daringly stayed in a B&B), Graystone Moor and Standing Stones Rigg, meant we could catch up with friends and family at a distance, outdoors and a few at a time of course.
Then we had some events on well-used areas with Skipwith Common (EBOR), Harlow Hill (CLARO), Sandall Beat (SYO), Hookstone Woods (CLARO) and Hob Moor (EBOR) with the second River Ouse Canoe-O (HOAA) around the same time.
October was a good month with 4 new areas (new to me anyway): Cabin Hill, Doctor’s Gate and Gull Quarry (NN) was a wonderful surprise with generally runnable heather moorland interspersed with 5 sizeable technically challenging old quarries; Shipley Country Park (DVO) was less challenging but well-planned; Birk Brow (CLOK) was short but plenty tough enough; Grangewood and Top Wood Plantations was maze-like and nettly. And I missed a HALO urban event due to a clash!!
Conyngham Hall (CLARO), Clifton Backies (EBOR) and Duncombe Park (EBOR) finished off the year nicely and it’s been lockdown ever since.
So, thanks to all the volunteers and even more to those whose work was in vain (please don’t give up) and especially to those working on events for this year.
2020 events thank you

Re: 2020 events thank you
Well said yted. I'll second that.
I think the only event I've been to (in the UK) since the pandemic started was the AIRE one at Harden Moor. It was much appreciated despite the weather.
Let's hope we can get one or two events staged this spring before the bracken becomes too rampant...
