Not Barnard Castle
People have suggested that there should be a MapRun course in Barnard Castle. NN have put on the next best thing, a MapRun course in the woods across the road from where Cummings stayed when he went to Durham.

Is it OK to drive from Aberdeenshire to Barnie to do this course? - purely to check my eyesight is OK of course.

It's in Durham not Barnard Castle, so I don't know whether the eyesight test excuse is applicable.

Will there be an enlarged mapscale for those who need it?

It depends on your score during the driving eyesight test. The tests for those who are borderline are as long as 60 miles, and are so exhausting they require a rest halfway.
