I went to events there in 1983, 1985 and 1995, all using the same 1983 map.
We went for a walk over the Roaches about a year ago, and walked up the way to the start and finish was in 1985, some of the land has been reclaimed as more intensive farmland, that I ran across back then.
Cambridge Uni also had a fell race in the early eighties that used the Roaches ridge, this seems to have re-started again with Andrew Addis organising it (use to O many years ago and also used to live next door to my sister!), which is now run as a there and back course to Shuntlingsloe.
The heathland area of the Roaches is managed / owned by Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, before it was the Peak National Park, who acquired it after a public outcry when it was brought for intensive sheep farming in the late seventies.
The other interesting point was that some wallabies were released there during WW2, and survived well into the eighties.
The other area in the north midlands we used in the eighties, that had some character was Weston Heath!

Weston Heath! The only time I've run there was that notoriously brackenful WOC selection race in 2008[?]. I remember that the map looked pretty promising, but sadly I wasn't tall enough to see any of the terrain.
