There was excellent news today for orienteering lovers as JK organisers confirmed that instead of cancelling this year’s Easter race, it will be held online for the first time. All existing JK entries will be automatically transferred, avoiding the need for refunds.
From the JK website: “We are really pleased to announce that the JK can take place after all this year as we are moving it online. In only 2 weeks, our developers have managed to create an entirely new online version of orienteering, which they are pretty sure will work for most people, most of the time. Nonetheless, we recommend that Elite competitors use at least 2 devices at the same time, just to be sure.
The online race will be available for all age categories with the exception of M60 and M65, as the risk to the NHS from stress related injuries was deemed excessive in the current environment. For these age classes, a free ‘mindfulness’ orienteering colouring book will be provided instead.
Course lengths will be published shortly but the longest course on Day 3, MW14, is expected to be around 20 levels. Shadowing will be allowed, as long as the junior shadowing has got dressed and brushed their teeth before helping others, who should declare themselves non-competitive.
If this year’s online JK is successful, British Orienteering intends to hold all future editions of the classic race online, as this would significantly reduce the cost of insurance, avoid last minute cancellations and most importantly future-proof the race against the eventual takeover of the entire British countryside by those damn successful buggers at parkrun.”

Oh! sad to see entries closed early and I missed the deadline by 30minutes.
Good luck with what looks an exciting event.
