I was very sad to read about Colin's death on the BOF website today.
When I mentioned it to Viv, my wife, she said "Oh, that nice man from Northern Ireland".
I got to know Colin better when, as BOF Vice-Chair, I was asked to make a presentation to him for "Services to Orienteering" at a major sports award dinner in Lagan, Northern Ireland. The invitation gave me the opportunity to research Colin's activities in many sports and his commitment to bridging the divides in Northern Ireland, not least through working with young people.
Colin was a founding member of the Northern Ireland Orienteering Association and Lagan Valley Orienteers and, as well as showing talent as an orienteer, took on virtually every role imaginable in the sport equally enthusiastically.
At the dinner I sat next to Dame Mary Peters, a long-time hero of mine. I spent the night with Colin and his wife, Joan, and enjoyed their hospitality and good company. We subsequently met at many events and enjoyed catching up on our various activities.
A "nice man", indeed.
