A very friendly and well organised event in the shadow of two of Scotland's most remote Munros in Attadale forest. I experienced the short score course and felt it was well planned with some nice route choice options. If only I was fitter!
1:30k map was nice and clear - took a bit to get my head around what was a new scale for me.
Plenty of orienteers on show and some good results.
Linear courses seem much in line with the time expectations - not always the case with its predecessor the LAMM in my experience, although a few people on the C course seem to have found day 2 quite tough going (another reason for going score!).
Midway camp was remote and scenic, but with a decent route out for any retirees.
Great weekend - hopefully will gather a few more entrants next year as it deserves it.

Re: Scottish Mountain Marathon
Any chance of Routegadget?
Very interested to see where Lisa got to on her first Mountain Marathon.

Re: Scottish Mountain Marathon
Not sure what I think of the 1:30,000 map. When I saw the race map at registration I thought wow that is detailed for a mountain marathon. It then has a knock on impact on the planning that is possible, which GG took advantage of as planner. Comparing to the map of the same area from LAMM 2004 (which was 1:50k OS data, enlarged to 1:40k - a typical LAMM approach), 60% of the elite control sites from the weekend's SMM are not even marked features on that LAMM map. I think it is just a different style of MM, that demands more detailed navigation techniques (would have been even more so had the clag been down, which it mostly wasn't at the weekend even when it rained). I heard someone say the style was more like a long-O than a MM. As an orienteer I quite enjoyed it.
One downside is getting an overview for planning long legs - the longest on elite being 8.5km, or 28cm on 1:30k. Folding the map to see the whole leg is awkward. Same argument applies to wanting 1:15k rather than 1:10k for a proper elite long distance O race with long route choice legs (reminds me of this course at Northern Champs 2017 where #17-18 could have done with a 1:15k map).
Otherwise a great event. The long leg on elite day 1 was one of the best route choices I've seen in a MM for a while.

All our Mountain Marathons (Marmot Dark Mountains, ROC, and now the Scottish) use Harvey 1:30k maps.
Might be able to get Routegadet working - will see what we can do.

Re: Scottish Mountain Marathon
I thought the medium score was excellent. Choice of lots of short legs maintaining interest or long slogs on the bigger hills if that was your preference.
So yes, a bit more like a long O, but I dont think thats a bad thing so long as it doesnt put non orienteers off.
Didnt see any lines of runners all weekend, even in the queue for the loos. Glad that the slit trenches appear to have been consigned to history.
1:30 is great for half blind oldies like me. I can actually read the map while on the go which I havent been able to do on an O map for a while.

Re: Scottish Mountain Marathon
My 23rd mountain marathon and one of the best planned in terms of route choice on the Medium Score. Knee and ankle problems prevent much running these days but still managed a place just outside the top half as we managed to string together a clever route choice that gave good points without massive physical effort. All other aspects of the event were excellent. The LAMM was a hard act to follow so well done for this inaugural event.
