The art of mapping is making sure the map is useable for its purpose - for orienteering this is to allow people to read it while racing, thus prominent features need to be exaggerated, gaps need to be enlarged and complex areas simplified - especially in urban maps.
Simply converting OS data without redrawing is not only against licensing law but also means the map is essentially unusable.

And it isn’t just urban maps – it is also large scale forest maps.
We have a large number of small forests, country parks and perhaps some highly detailed areas such as dunes and former mining areas that cannot be sensibly mapped using ISOM 2017. These are often mapped at a scale of 1:5000 using the ISOM 2000 symbols enlarged to 150% (as would be used on a 1:10000 map). They tend to show more detail than would be possible at 1:15000 to provide enough useable feature in a very small area. They are not be suitable for major championships, but at least it was possible under the old standard to produce a useable map to the specification.
BOF have been pushing for all maps to be converted to ISOM 2017 - even for local events. This simply wouldn’t work for this sort of map, so a solution would have been to convert them to ISSOM (most ISSOM symbols are identical to ISOM symbol at 150%). This is not an option with ISSprOM.

If a feature is non-existent then it shouldn't be on the map! If an impassable (i.e. forbidden to cross/enter) area is unclear or poorly defined then it should be clearly taped on the ground as well as mapped in a colour that stands out at speed (it's supposed to be a sprint, not a fannyabout ) Mapping in unbounded olive green against a background of open yellow is just about the worst option. Purple (714) might work but too much purple makes the map a mess.

Well, they've issued a decree to that effect, but given that they don't care whether the major events they have responsibility for meet the specs I can't see them doing very much to actually enforce it!

The new standard is now on the IOF website:

It will be interesting to see how the candystriping works for real multilevel structures.

Re: New Sprint mapping spec (ISSprOM)
The real major (and possibly quite controversial) changes seem to be the removal of the light grey crossable wall - it is now the same symbol as on forest maps (which also allows the addition of the half-retaining wall symbol), and the removal of 'black' green - so hedges will either have to be impassable green, or olive, or maybe even purple.
Interested to see where the 'paved area with scattered trees' symbol gets used...
