Re: New rules on map scales...
1:7.5k for long distance for MW45+ does seem a little crazy. If you have a long route choice or two, which for 45,50,55,60 you should, it’ll be half a metre long...

won't matter in UK as you don't get proper long legs any more (or so it seems with my limited amount of orienteering in the UK recently )
Go orienteering in Lithuania......... best in the world:)

I suspect you're just trying to wind things up, create an argument for the sake of it - you're talking about a 3.7km leg... how often do you see anything like that on a 45 upwards course - anywhere in the world?

Re: New rules on map scales...
Of course 3.7km is only a baby leg compared to what is possible in Deeside:
https://www.attackpoint.org/viewlog.jsp ... 2017-12-02
check 26th November session...
Map would have to be about 1.5m long at 1:7,500!
Roller maps anyone?

Even a 2km leg would be almost 30cm - but never mind that, does everyone really agree that it is sensible to have 1:7.5k for long distance orienteering aged 45-60?!

Yes! And 1:3,000 for sprint maps. Orienteering is a running sport, not a standing-still-trying-to-work-out-WTF-the-map-says sport.
Here's a Short Brown course with a 2.5km leg (map was A3 double sided) and folk seemed to manage...

(NB Routegadget uses the 1:10,000 map but all courses except Black (3.9km leg) and Brown (3.1km leg) had 1:7,500)

Yes. With my slower running these days 1:7500 feels the same as 1:15000 used to!! Plus I can actually read the map.

Yes.
NO! And as a subset of everyone, I win.

Gross is right, but the logic is the wrong way round. Its because we moved to larger scales (and computer-screen planning) that we dont get long legs. Its not just the planners: event organisers think its OK to use much smaller areas than previously.
Does anyone think its sensible for the JK elite classic to be on an A5 map, some of which is being "saved" for the relay? The planner made a decent effort at finding a long leg. but really he wasn't given much to work with.

Re: New rules on map scales...
If you printed this M45 course at 1:7500 the map could double as an emergency shelter:

Keep in mind in Sweden courses for veterans tend to be shorter than in the UK. A typical long course for M45 is 6.5 km.

6-7 on that Caw map is some leg. I assume right is faster as less climb? Or straight haha! Sorry to derail conversation...

Right obviously

Not such a good example as the fastest route isn't likely to be far from the straight line in Culbin.
FWIW I'm in the 1:7,500 camp. The advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

Re: New rules on map scales...
For Gross's benefit we do sometimes still have decent long legs here in the UK.
Here is a link to routegadget for an event last weekend:
https://www.syo.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#175
My favourite is Light Green but some long legs on all courses. No idea who the Planner was
P.S. The scale was 1:10,000 for everyone as there isn't a great deal of detail.
