JEC 2018
Well done to our Juniors taking an excellent 6th place in today's Mixed Sprint Relay. Positive start for WOC 2022.

Re: JEC 2018
Yes, we’ll done GB1; an exciting race. Fiona Bunn led the whole way round the first leg. Eddie Narbutt and Freddie Carcas had two solid runs, staying in touch in 9th, then Laura King on last leg pulled up to a podium position.
On to the Middles today in a tricky looking forest. Good luck to the whole team.

Re: JEC 2018
Another great run from Fiona Bunn, 8th in the W20 JEC Middle, to the amazing Simone Abersold (SUI) winning by a clear 2minutes.
3 GB girls in top 20 in W20 shows some strength in depth for us in this class.
Only 1 top 20 for the GB boys in M18/20 showing the gap GB team still have to close in Forest O.
Today is the Long, starting at 0900, with the unusual format of a mass start! Should be interesting if you have time to follow.

Re: JEC 2018
Results are provisional. There is a big issue with many runners going through an OOB and apparently gaining a lot of time. Winners on M20 were all DQ but apparently big jury/team leaders meeting ongoing.

Re: JEC 2018
From the website: The current decision from the jury is to finish the race at the second-last control. (Last Radio control).
Given that (unusually) the last leg was one of the longest on the course and route choice was critical this seems an odd decision.

Re: JEC 2018
The commentary referred to DQs for going through an OOB. All courses had the same long last leg and the only obvious OOB on the map is on the northern route choice via the Lake, where you have to run the north shore and not the OOB south shore. Maybe that was the cause?
Anyway if lots of competitors take an illegal route then you would expect them to be DQ rather than just void that leg, unless of course there was an issue with the marking of OOB on competitors maps or on the ground?
Current outcome is that GB girls go from 4th and 5th to 9th and 10th, which I guess is better than a DQ.....

The tracking doesn't suggest that anyone went through the large OOB by the lake/steep slope.

Re: JEC 2018
The track from the start area back to the finish was in a large OOB area. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the printing, the pink ink didn't actually show on the map, giving it the appearance of being an in-bounds passage through the OOB. This massively affected the results.

Re: JEC 2018
The World of O article shows the OOB more clearly - much more extensive than shown on the tracking.

Re: JEC 2018
The understatement of the World of O article is interesting:
This was a quite controversial choice, especially as this was a mass start race where runners typically could have good reason to not be in the lead out of tactical reasons.
It's bad enough voiding part of a course in any race, but is plainly ridiculous in a mass start race.
When I'm Controlling I try very hard to avoid any situation where advantage can be gained by any sort of cheating. Sometimes it is unavoidable, but looking at the long route choice leg at the end, I feel the Planner was asking for trouble.

Re: JEC 2018
It suggests a novel solution to the 'mass start - which format' debate:
- "in order to discourage competitors from simply following and attempting to outsprint others at the end, the organiser will draw lots post-race to decide which control is designated as the finish"

It's intentional as well as unfortunate.
In ISOM, it is recommended that the purple should not show above black on the map.
That's good for saving us having to break circles, but its clearly a problem with OOB since it is common to want to say "You must stay on the track when you go through this area". Which is what many runners at JEC thought the map meant. One might hope people would learn from the experience, but as usual there's no explanation being given.

Re: JEC 2018
The overprinting suggests that using the track is an acceptable route.
Looking at it closely though, the area without the OOB overprint to the north west of the track has been left clear so that the red line can be seen. Unfortunately this has the effect of making the track route look viable. Had more of this area been marked as OOB then it would have been obvious that the track route wasn't allowed.
