WOC 2022 embargos
Details of the WOC 2022 embargos have now been published on the Scottish Orienteering website https://www.scottish-orienteering.org/soa/page/woc-2022-embargos and will also be published on Eventor and British Orienteering website. In answer to Graeme the inside of his place of work is also subject to the embargo.

Re: WOC 2022 embargos
Thanks Colin for providing some further clarity on the situation.
The embargo details say that:
"Additional restrictions will be imposed in the immediate lead up to WOC 2022".
Do you have a rough proposed timescale for when 'the immediate lead up' will be please?

Are people allowed to study the area on Google Streetview?

And to answer the question people keep asking me (as if its any of my business).
The EUOC Big Weekend is going ahead in 2019, on an area outside the embargo. An area they should have used by now anyway, in my opinion. Expect the same quality of Edinburgh touristic experience - no skanky housing schemes!

I’m guessing they may have a tough time putting on the Big Weekend in 2020, 2021 and 2022 though? All for a good cause...

There's a lot of Edinburgh untouched by O, plenty of space for some new areas for etc urban/sprint races.

Indeed.
I've felt for a while that the Big Weekend has got a bit stale. Each new group of students comes to it afresh, so perhaps don't notice that many participants have seen it all before. The embargo has forced them to use different areas which are just as scenic and tricky, but will be new for competitors. BW2019 should be the best year in recent memory.

Will there be an indoor sprint again for those of us who missed it due to the weather last time?

Graeme - what a novel excuse not to go to work "I can't, its in an embargoed area"

I don't know about making the whole team, but possibly more likely that you might "make" a WOC team member

Re: WOC 2022 embargos
EUOC and the annual Big Weekend are indeed alive and well despite the constantly propagating embargo taking up most of the usual city map as well as King's Buildings and Heriot Watt. Recent positive updates have at least given us back The Meadows and most of Holyrood Park, although everyone is still recovering from the shock involved with an absence of the traditional beerienteering format for the next four years...
As Graeme mentioned above, we have unfortunately been forced us to break from the normal venues for the Friday and Saturday Big Weekend races and explore some new maps and arenas. However you can certainly still expect the same high speed but often very technical old-town urban orienteering that we've presented every year for the past decade, without having to worry if the IOF or Colin are spying on you

I expect you might get a fair number of foreign entries to compensate for the pain of changing venues...

Apparently "immediate lead-up" = 3 years beforehand
The initial restrictions (in place until 31 August), which applied to "all potential WOC 2022 team members and those with links to elite squads e.g. coaches, team leaders. These restrictions also apply to other orienteers who intentionally or unintentionally could provide an unfair advantage to competitors at WOC 2022 e.g. through publishing of routes and timings on Routegadget, Strava or similar", permitted access for non-orienteering purposes.
However the new rules (from 1 September) which prohibit access except along specified "permissive routes" are not restricted to "other orienteers" but now appear to apply to everyone: "This embargo applies to all potential WOC 2022 team members and those who intentionally or unintentionally could provide an unfair advantage to competitors at WOC 2022."
Rather intrigued to see how the organising team intend to enforce an access ban on anyone, including non-orienteers, who could unintentionally provide an unfair advantage - are they planning a general strava /instagram blackout of the embargoed areas? - and also to hear what sanctions they have available.
