Re: The British Sprint O champs map complaint thread
I noted the correction in the start system and most helpfully it told me that it was on leg 7-8 on my course. I managed to remember that whereas I rarely remember corrections associated with particular control codes. On going round I glanced at the gap and saw a fence and some machinary there so it was probably an active building site, so quite reasonable to make OOB even if potentially passable.

I agree the map correction notice in the start lanes was very helpful, but it would have been good if the start officials could have asked us to read it. Many competItors didn’t. As to saying that the new OOB should have been taped, marshalled or signposted on the ground, I wouldn’t be critical of the organisers. It was a late change, arranging additional manpower is not easy. Organising a British Sprints with back to back races is always pressurised. I thought it was an excellent event, even if I still can’t work out the multi-layer mapping!

I'm glad I'm not the only one! Despite rigorous study beforehand, I still couldn't be confident of what the map showed and totally ploughed my A Final as a result.

Both running levels were shown at Bath and a very clever piece of cartography allowed the representation to be fair … for some (most, I guess) but not for others whose brains are wired for 2D only!
"Oh, but I did the research" said those defending the courses.
"But you shouldn't need to do research" is my view. If you have to do research beforehand then, to me, it's a sure sign that it's an attempt to get round some unfairness.

I didn't have a problem interpreting the map (apart from the usual colour issues of course) although I'm not sure the purple lines helped. It would be good to see the original ISOM compliant map without the purple lines and other non-standard symbols if the mapper or planner has a copy.
Fun event by the way - thanks to all.

Re: The British Sprint O champs map complaint thread
I've just noticed on Routegadget that 7 out of 16 posters (including a couple of potential medal winners) in the Final Course 12 Leg 4-5 took an abortive trip up a ramp to find their expected route blocked by locked doors. Being one of them, I thought I'd do a limerick about it.
On the day that one ran up the ramp
One's prospects of being the Champ
Had not gone to plan,
But had gone down the pan
The day that one ran up the ramp.

Yes the error on the map was unfortunate to say the least but I don't think it changed the winner (unless someone was seriously put off). The other placings in the top 10 were affected though. those who chose the best route on the map ended up 10 to 20s worse off rather than the 10 to 20s better off they deserved!
Otherwise I thought the venue, map, planning and organisation were very good.

Actually 3-4 is quite a tricky route as well - I see a few peple didnt find the route down and under via the nonstandard mapped area. Dont think I would have seen that unless I'd done a power of geeking beforehand.
Orienteering - its no walk in the park
