ScotJos team all watching JWOC live here in Gotland - what a result for Matt - great to see him on the Podium via the live facebook stream & getting mobbed by the GB women...

Re: JWOC 2018 - Hungary
As the team still have the image of Matthew Fellbaum's incredible medal-winning run firmly in their heads, they go into the third, and perhaps the most exciting race of the week - the Middle Qualifier. For just about the only junior international race of the year, it's about trading off some of your speed with some extra safe orienteering to the right extent that gets you into the final, rather than any podium.
No less this year it is expected to be about getting round cleanly rather than quickly with a maze of green corridors expected. Although saying that, at 3.4km and 4.3km for the women and men respectfully, it's quite likely the qualifiers have never been so long, and hence fast. And at first glance, there doesn't seem to be anything too tricky about the courses - but we'll find out soon!
The JWOC MQ has a history of having qualifying windows of anything between 2 and 6+mins, and it's very difficult to predict before the race begins. Hopefully the GB runners will have the right mindsets going into the race and focus on finding their own controls rather than any of their competitors, last night's footie results, or anything else. Leave it to the other nations to go for that imaginary qualification gold and bin 10mins on the first control
All info needed is here - http://jwoc2018.hu/middle-q-live/ . Starts between 9 and 12 UK time. Let's keep our fingers crossed for our strong junior team!

Does anyone know how many go through to the finals? Didn't see anything in Bulletin 4.

Top 20.
It's in bulletin 4, but in the general section on start draws rather than the middle quali/middle final sections.

Re: JWOC 2018 - Hungary
Hardly anyone has raced clean so far today - perhaps a bit of luck involved with some of the intricate sections where 1:10000 might not manage to truly represent the terrain.
GB juniors having mixed runs, and for some it's going to be a tense next 90mins or so. At least Matt looks to be safe - touch wood.
Aidan Rigby off to a great start just now at his first international qualifier. Niamh just starting now too.
Swiss are on to making it a full set..!

Questions for coaches...
Is it best to start early or late?
Rules are generally written assuming late is better, but when its hot and doesn't track up...
Also, do you give your best runners the best start times in the quali, or assume they'll be OK and support the weaker runners?

Looks like top 20 into final are Matt, Niamh, Laura. Aidan and Fiona too close to call. Chloe and Alastair still running....

Aebersold's routes were interesting. Some were very long, even by the standards of those playing safe, and she still ended up making the odd mistake.Bash wrote:Hardly anyone has raced clean so far today

Re: JWOC 2018 - Hungary
That's 50% into what's going to be a very exciting A final, one GB runner from each heat interestingly.
Niamh taking the performance of the day hands down, finishing 9th on her heat as both a JWOC newbie and W18 runner. Additional kudos to Ali for qualifying as a newbie M18, with an only slightly larger margin off the win than Niamh.
Well done to the whole team, I imagine some will be disappointed but at the very least the experience is gold. Lots to learn before the next race, whether it's tomorrow or the relay. Probably more than most JWOCs given the terrain!

Re: JWOC 2018 - Hungary
Start times (UK time) for the A finalists today are out; good luck all, plus anyone heading out on B finals for some nice experience.
10:43 - Fiona Bunn
10:47 - Laura King
11:14 - Aidan Rigby
11:18 - Alastair Thomas
11:24 - Matthew Fellbaum
11:39 - Niamh Hunter
Given that Qualifiers are normally easier than Finals in terms of technicality, then it could be a very entertaining watch. A new set of winners is almost more likely than not and it will be interesting to see if anyone can finally better Simona A!
Slow and steady, in the correct control circle, could well win the race today...
