Well no not actually of course, but having read the "Know your course leader" article in the April edition of Compasssport, I noticed that Heather Monro has admitted to that most heinous of sins - not being a member of a club!
This of course means that, having competed at more than three events, she should in fact be banned from any furhter orienteering in the UK.
The fact this hasnt happened of course just highlights the sheer daftnesss and unworkability of the Insurance related BOF rule that after three runs you must join a club. If such a high profile orienteer as Heather is able to avoid being detected what chance is there of it actually working at all? In fact the only impact it can conceivably have is to put off potential newcomers who feel badgered into joining a club when they may notfeel able to commit (to years of being pestered to vounteer for planning/organising/coaching/helping/storing stuff in their shed).

No, you don't need to join a club to carry on orienteering after 3 events, you need to join BOF. And if you'd bothered to check event results or rankings you'd've seen that Heather is a BOF-only member:

Well it would be daft if there was such a rule - but there isn't.
What seems daft is that even after the non-existence of such a rule is pointed out repeatedly on various nopesport threads people keep inventing this imaginary rule and complaining about it.
The insurer offers free 3rd party insurance to individuals for their first 3 events - but unlike driving motor vehicles there is no legal requirement to be insured to run round a forest - or indeed most of the things we do.

Nope. Heather is a life member of BOF.
While it seems like a nice gesture to do this for our WOC medallists, the loss to the club end of the sport is obvious.
It also wouldn't surprise me if Heather was unable to join a club without joining BOF twice.

OK so apologies for not understanding what seems to be blindingly obvious to everyone else.
How do I join as a BOF only member?
Are there hundreds of these individuals in existence?
First time I have heard of this option in 37 years or so of orienteering.

By following the instructions on the website:
To get the most out of your membership and the orienteering community we recommend that you join your local club (and their Association) as well as British Orienteering.
Most clubs organise training opportunities and social activities for their members so it is a great way to improve your orienteering skills and make new friends. You can find details of your nearest Club by using the search facility.
However, if you would prefer to just become a member of British Orienteering, simply select BOF when you are asked to choose a Club and Association to join.
A quick check of the ranking list shows that there are at least 55 BOF-only members at the moment.

Exactly as I explained.
That is a faq about insurance NOT rules of orienteering.
The insurance company offers free third party insurance cover to non members for three events ... Big deal.
There is no rule that states that you need third party insurance to compete in an orienteering event.

Re: Heather Monro banned from Orienteering....
I wonder how many claims there have ever been against newbies running their first three events? In most of the scenarios I can envisage, someone would claim against the organising club (which is covered anyway); the only situation I can think of where they would claim against an individual might be if that person tripped them up or the like (since unless you saw who was responsible and they stopped, you wouldn't know who to claim against). I wonder if it's worthwhile BOF even offering this cover; my home contents policy (which I think is typical) covers:
and I don't see any exclusions relevant to orienteering. Most competitors will surely have something similar?
...your legal liability for damages you have to pay if someone makes a claim against you for
- accidental death or illness of, or bodily injury to, any person
- accidental loss of or damage to property
and I don't see any exclusions relevant to orienteering. Most competitors will surely have something similar?

And for extra credit ... if, like Heather, I'm already a BOF lifetime member, how do I add my club membership without joining BOF twice?
