Over 100 athletes will descend on Oxford this weekend for the British Universities (BUCS) Orienteering championships (weather permitting).
Due to organisational considerations, this year sees a reversal of the traditional format with the relay race brought forward to the Saturday, ahead of an individual race on Sunday. Teams of three will fight it out over 12-15km* on the slopes of Shotover Country Park, before heading to Bradenham Woods on Sunday to decide the individual and overall championships.
Whilst the students will be unusually well rested and clear headed for the relay race, an element of unpredictability may arise from personnel changes enforced on some teams. Due to a combination of academic commitments and the lure of a dark Swedish forest, some institutions will be bringing fewer competitors than usual - which has the potential to make this the most open BUCS competition in recent history.
You can follow the action live at a cost of £0 by going here. Meanwhile, sporadic streaming of the key moments may appear on the Facebook event. The Men's relay will start at 14:30, Women's at 14:40, and the Ad Hoc class at 14:50, whilst the first teams will likely be finishing around 16:00 - 16:30.
Depending on mobile phone signal, coverage of the individual race will be available via the usual social media channels on Saturday. The last seeded starters will be setting off at 1pm, and should be finishing an hour later.
* a little over one Swedish mile, or "ett mila", if that is your preferred unit of distance.
Big relay race this weekend
